In game faction tab: what is it used for? The only thing I can find on the forums is referencing pre-registration.. What will the "faction" tab be used for??

It's just the start of community warfare. Unit registration is the first slice of CW pie.

So at the moment, it lets you create a unit, and nothing else.

you have to talk to a unit lead, Check the recruitment threads

Don't bother. It's for people that have finished their first 25 cadet rounds. Just sit around and wait for someone to recruit you into their unit. Helpful tip: Don't tell them that you're so new you don't know what the "R" button is for. Most likely, some unit will recruit you if you don't appear to be a drooling mouthbreather.
