.... back in a 'mech seat in years. I've got to say: It felt good. Really good.

Now, it was not a beta invite, or anything fancy like that. I loaded up MW4:Mercs through Mektek. I had trouble connecting to a live game, so I settled for a few single player missions. First stop: Mechlab. Threw on a few weapons, got the armor just right and I was good to go.

I clicked the launch button.

It was rather clumsy at first. Like running into an old flame from your teenage years. Shes a little older than you remember, maybe she's had a few kids. But she still has that pretty smile...

The HUD booted up and I quickly made my way to the options menu to customize the controls. It was difficult at first, so I took my best guess at what my old setup was. A decade is a long time, but after a few trials and a few errors I got my controls pretty close.

I assigned my JJ's to the 'J' key and started to blow away some tanks and a light mech here or there when I noticed something:

I was jamming my thumb down on the space bar. It wasn't bound to anything, so it took a few seconds to realize what was happening. My JJ's used to be bound to the space bar, not the 'J' key ... I was pretty shocked how somehow my brain had remembered that.

A few more adjustments to controls... and a bit longer spent in the mechlab and I had been transported back in time.

My fingers were flying across the keyboard, switching to the mouse and back, adjusting my throttle with 1-9 keys, Ctrl + R to toggle between active and passive radar, switching weapon groupings on the fly.

I started to get in the zone. I was a mech pilot again.

At first my shots were pretty wild. Lots of distributed damage across the entire enemy mech, but slowly the shots started to hone in. Mechs were dying faster and faster. I was pin-pointing red flashing torso sections over and over causing the mech to go down.

Wave upon wave of 4 AI controlled mechs came at me and it was only me in my Mk2...

A half hour passed, maybe an hour... and when I took out a final mech in a wave and proceeded to overheat and blowup at almost the same time... I knew it was time. I pressed escape and left the match.

Like sneaking into the kitchen on Thanksgiving day and stealing some turkey before mealtime. I've had a taste, and it was delicious and now I'm content to wait for the full meal. I'm ready for MW:O.
