Commando needs to have quirks that make it a very apt and super radar mech. Give it some exceptional bonuses in that role. Even then it's still out paced by the other ECM mechs, but still. An effort should be made.

Built in Zoom module that doesn't take up a slot, + % when using any electronic piece of gear with a 2/3/3 for module slots. Adding a built in module to certain mechs that need to be spruced up could open up another avenue of power creep for the less desired builds.

As a light you can NARC...

My only real problem with lights (except the locust, which has its own issues) is when LRMs are out, light are affected the most.

Part of a lights "armor" is their speed, but that doesn't help against LRMs, in fact the LRMs aim for their legs.

But, unlike any other weight class, it's even easier to find tall-enough cover (for a Light) in time to shield yourself from the Lurms. ;) :)
(true, it can be a bit tricky at times to do so in Alpine)
Although, truth be told, if I'm not zipping around with my 5D, chances are I'm either taking a peek around a tall object or drifting around near the back of my team, waiting for an opportunity. :D
And if someone shoots LRM's at me during a fight, I either run for cover or use the mechs of their own team for cover. (it's very rare for a TK to happen in such an occasion...)

True if you are sniping with them you can be safe, but no harassing/brawling, since a good volley of lrms can take you legs out faster than you can blink. This just takes away their versatility, to say the least.

Currently:

The game as it is now, favors pure damage output. Each game mode favors it. Thats why the Twolf is the king so far it gets damage output+speed+agility.

Lights basically fill a requirement.

How they are used is kinda up to the pilot, you have to leverage speed and maneuverability against less damage output.
On a Team, this can be coordinated, specially via chat.
Puglandia, well, not so easy.
ASIDE from capping you can:

Vulture late match and save they day.

Hunt vulnerable Assaults/LRM boats.

Harass the enemy by being a type of fire-support for your team's heavies. -This is really dependent on the quality of the pug.

There is the erppc sniper, but ive only seen a handfull of people do well with that.

My best Light game is in my Kitfox, which is a slow light. It taught me fire support which really upped my game in general. Plus being small and attacking from odd angles, as well as timing enemy cooldowns.
If i want to hunt whales i use the SRM24 kitfox. May get back into this with a Commando but it will be tricky.
There is also the Game of Locusts.

Of the Locust, all i can say is, live a good life, have a good insurance policy.

I hope CW gives a broader variety and use for lights.

In a team environment the lights often make or break a team, they definitely can't carry as consistantly as heavies can, especially in solo queue.

Not a clue what you are talking about when it comes to HSR though.

My worry about right now is that I like and want to be able to pilot light mechs without feeling like an inherant detriment to the side that I drop on.

As long as you are not in a locust or some commandos ... and you are decent at piloting a light mech ... you are not a detriment ...especially since every team must have lights.(Unfortunately, in my opinion, locusts are so fragile in comparison to other lights and can't carry sufficient firepower that they are a detriment compared to every other light ... unless the player is such an excellent locust pilot but fails piloting any other light ... they would be better off in any other light than the locust).

Jenner, Firestarter, Spider and Raven (ECM variants particularly) ... can all be very effective and ECM is worth its weight in whatever you like to name as a force multiplier.

FoxFire (So.. What Is The Point Of Lighter Mechs Now? )

Well friend you can still go 180KPH with your hair on fire and pea shoot mechs in the back? In fact I think 50% of my deaths have been because a light pilot got behind me and shot me in the back repeatedly until I exploded.I wish they would put a short range100 meter 360 degree radar in MWO like in past MechWarrior games then you would really have something to cry about.

Just count your blessings you have as a light pilot it could be a lot worse.

I dunno, I tend to do pretty well in my lights. Usually about on par with the heavier mechs ... maybe I just suck at Assaults!
