My BJ-1X still makes a mess.
Clan stuff, the mediums are a good place to start. The DW is scary if you run into them headlong, but a single Jenner can drop one no problem if it is abandoned.

Really? The Iyla is the only hero I have no issues with! Sure it's slow, but put dual gauss, 3xml and a XL280 in and you're golden. That thing is my money maker!
I've got a Boars Head, Huginn, Oxide, and Jester as well, and I don't have nearly as many nice things to say about them. They each have their place, but up until lately, I called the Jester the worst hero ever. That is until I realized how great it is with 4xERLL and a XL315. That thing is dangerous now. A long range powerhouse.
I like Brody319's idea to have the option to test a mech. I think you should be able to use them on the Training Grounds. That should give you a great idea of how fast and agile it is, combined with the ability to test weapons.

Sounds like you and I have something in common... A 50% Ilya deal around the beginning of the year was my entry into buying MC. Ended up with around $100 of MC which I've finally whittled through with 50% Hero sales and a few months of Premium time.
I finally broke down and bought the Wave 2 complete pack. 3 months of Premium time, 12 clan mechs with Prime variants, the Atlas-S, King Crab... And a bunch of random rewards, like colors, patterns and warhorns. (I can't stand cockpit items though.) I think it's worth it for $120. That's like half a year of grinding for me.
I'll probably be suckered into buying more MC when it goes on sale around Christmas. Good times.

This, quite muchly so.
I've been bitched out for pointing this out and saying that it's more than a bit out of hand (Especially with the constant stream of new content.) But that's neither here nor there; Right now you need to choose very very carefully. I regret my Stalker Purchase After hearing that the Vulture would be released around my Birthday.
Look around, and look up peoples youtubes on the 'Mechs. Make sure you know exactly what you're in for.

Well I probably haven't been very supportive of the mech. I went with the 3 UAC/5s and 3 ML. I also think I put an engine that was probably too small so it chugs along at like 40-50 KPH.
Was good when I got into a groove but I hated how restricted I felt inside it. Was slow to the fight, was slow out of the fight. If I took it out now I would get ripped up in a few seconds.
Jester on the other hand let me play like I wanted too, fast moving, all range hitter with plenty of armor. I think the only changes I made to it was slapping on some ERLlas on the ears, and pulse MLas on the face.
Also already owned a C1, and K2. K2 is probably my favorite, 2 er large lasers, 2 large lasers, and 2 machine guns with 2 tons of ammo. burn off the armor and rip the insides out. also got it to tweak out at about 78 KPH.
Its not a grind if you like the mechs you are in. (also if you own a hero/prime with 30% more C-bills)

I'd give it a try... Dual Gauss (with 3xML) and Dual AC10's (with LL or ERLL) are a few of the successful configs I've run it with. The key is the fast tracking of the arms. I kill lights constantly with those fast gauss. Just don't torso lock! I tried the 3xUAC5 build too and didn't care for it.
If you go for Cataphracts, I like the CTF-4x with quad AC5s, a XL255 and 9 tons of ammo. Put it into two groups or chainfire... there's a reason people call it the chainsaw. It really needs speed tweak to be more effective however.
I've got a Catapult A1, K2 and Jester. The other two didn't appeal to me. They make good LRM boats and long range skirmishers. My K2 is a dual gauss mech, the Jester 4xERLL. Both perform well. I usually just boat LRMs and Streaks with the A1. I've gotten a lot of cbills from that mech...

First match after getting my build and first tier tree maxed. It also helps when your team works together. Been a good day for the most part. Think I'm gonna be playing this mech a bit tonight.
