AS7-D. It's got the best weapon hardpoints of the Atlas mechs thus far imo. It also has the crucial zombie CT lasers for brawling.

Alternate approach here.
My current plan knowing that I'm not good at and enjoying Assaults so far compared to other weight classes(but have Elite Level unlocked for assaults):
I already got enough XP for Basic Skills using the Trial RS(C), double XP weekend helped with that.
I'll then go buy the normal RS and unlock Basics Skills without upgrading the Variant with DHS,Endo...
If I enjoy the Atlas DDC+S enough I may still upgrade and level the RS (and buy the D maybe ;) ), otherwise keep it as-is or even sell it some day.
OFC this is not at all taking into account what other variants could do better, but it might be an option for some as well.

Edit: clarification

Im really glad this thread is here......as it is literally exactly what I came here to start a thread for for the exact same reason as the OP. Sweet. Its a really tough call it seems between the D and the RS. The zombie lazorz of the D are undoubtedly useful as you invariably get pieces of you blown off in an Atlas.......yet its craptastic handling means that 4 arm lazorz in the RS could be quite useful up until that point you lose the arms.....man tough call.

I find the arm weapons to be extremely limited in mixed terrain, always shooting the ground or a building when I think I had a clear shot. And while 4xLL on the arms would be natural choice, its way too much heat for any Atlas. Better to have the 2x ML in the CT for zombie after the arms are lost from shielding.

The new Atlas looks like it'll have at least three missile harpoints on its LT out of the four total it is supposed to have, and two energy hardpoints in the CT. If its anything like it is supposed to be, there will be at least one ballistic slot in the RT and one energy in each Arm. This kind of makes the D obsolete if you intend to use an AC20. If you would like to use two different ballistic weapons, ie 2 UAC or2 LB10-X, as PGI will probably lower it to one ballistic slot for balance.

Anyways, 4x SRM6 + 1x AC20 = 71.6, not counting energy weapons. That happens every four seconds with that build.

To any reading this: before you plop down 10 million c-bills, please wait like, what, 2 weeks? Wait for the quirk pass. I am guessing the D and K will get something pretty nice, especially the K. Depending on what you want to do with 3rd Atlas, quirk pass might make a world of difference on choice.

I own them all anyway, but I want to put that ou there before someone has buyers remorse a week after getting one.
