The good news is that if you find a mech you enjoy playing and play it well enough to have fun, once you have two other mechs of the same chassis, you can just keep playing that one mech and having fun. You do not have to own all of the mechs.
The even better news is that grinding for c-bills and experience is not much different than playing for the fun of it.

The grind is pretty much impossible at the moment, TBH.
That's only if you plan to collect them all. With 7 mechbays (4 from start and 3 from mech challenges) it doesn't take that long to fill them up. Plus you don't have to expect to get a mech every few weeks. Just rearrange your RL priorities.

I consider myself fairly new (only started really playing around 2-3 weeks ago) and so far I make the most money in a light, around 75k ish on a ok game (can be win or loss, just that I personally did ok) and usually 100k+ on a nice game (I did well and team did good enough to win) and 130k+ on great games (I did great, team didn't sit around).
I didn't make nearly as much money before though, I find the secret for me was to forget about c-bills and maximum profit. In fact, doing 600ish dmg gives approx. 6k c-bill bonus. The key is to help your team by spotting ahead, (but don't suicide rush, just mark targets for the LRMs) attacking the enemy lights, and also watching the flank a few times.
Never stay still always do something, be it taking pot-shots to get aggro off the heavies or look for enemy lights.
If all went well you should be doing a fair amount of damage while getting a nice win and a lot of kill assists. If you do even 1 dmg to any 'mech and a teammate kills the target you get somewhere around 4k c-bills if I remember right. So helping the team = win, and win = kills, and kills = c-bills if you tag even a few of the enemies.
I run a FireStarter with xl295 + 2ml + 1erll

Here is where it gets tricky; your personal best match will most likely not be your best paying match. I recently had a game where I made over 400K cbills for the match, but I only had one kill. Done with Premium Time in a Hero mech with LRM's, TAG, and Active Probe for lots of damage/component destruction, Tag Assists, and Spotting Bonuses.
My recommendation to anyone looking to avoid the grind to is get premium time and then buy 2 hero mechs. (Premium time is better than a hero mech because it benefits every mech you have). Drop solo in hero A, once dead/victorious, Drop in hero B. Do not spectate if you want cbills. Take Tag and BaP. Focus on kill assists, LRM's are great for hitting everyone once. Don't use consumables to maximize cbills, only use them to help grind xp.
Psychologically, I try to avoid falling below 1M Cbills; It just feels like it takes longer to get from 0 to 1M than it does to get from 1m to 2M. Dang weapon modules taking all my cbills. Oh yeah, Modules! I have close to 100M cbills in modules. If you thought mechs were a grind....MMMMMM Modules. 3M cbills so my Mlas shoots 30 more meters? I'll take two!
Like others have said, just play the game and the cbills will come. Watching the tally always makes it seem like more of a grind. Good Luck and Have Fun!

Avoid buying every mech that catches your fancy. There are a limited number of go to mechs purchasable with c-bills that serve competitive players well and those should be the mechs to concentrate on. Once you have one of each class and got them to master, you'll find that you're more effective, the earnings become less of an issue and you can then try out mechs as and when you have enough c-bills.
Bottomline, don't stress out on trying to get the newest bling and focus on getting the go to mechs and mastering them. Avoid consumables when trying to accumulate c-bills, get 1 seismic module and swap between mechs and accumulate as many free mechbays as you can even if you don't currently need them. Defer modules other than seismic to later as the cost are substantial and would be better used getting the go to mechs.

If you play a lot, you will grind everything out in time. If your playtime is limited, may I interest you in some premium time, hero mechs, or preorder packages? Just like in other free to play games, there is a business model involved.
