Hitboxes are, at the most basic level - If you hit a specific part on a target, what component(s) the damage gets applied to. For more info and to see them, I suggest http://mwomercs.com/...x-localization/

Someone else may come along with a better answer.

The term comes from fighting games (I believe) where basic boxes are used to tell whether an attack actually hits

In that image above - Ken's "red" box is the area of his attack, if that red box doesn't hit any of Ryu's blue boxes - the attack doesn't hit, even if it looks like Ken is actually hitting Ryu (IE: if it his his forward toes - which are not in any hitboxes)
Similarly - an attack may hit, even though it doesn't look like it does, as Ryu's hitboxes extend over the top of his head.

As far as MWO is concerned the link in RedEagle's post highlights the defensive hitboxes for the various Mechs - you want to hit a Commando's left torso? Your attack has to hit the area highlighted as Left Torso.

Or in other words, the Left Torso Hitbox.

All mechs are made of eight components: two legs, two arms, two side torsos, center torso, head. The left, right, and center torso also have both a front and a back, for a total of 11 distinct areas. This is 11 different armour sections and 8 different internal sections

A hitbox in MWO is what part of the mech's body corresponds to what armor section/component.

The hitbox thread gives us a colour coded look at all of the parts

Some mechs have specific details about thier hitboxes worth noting, such as the Atlas's cockpit/head hitbox is the left eye only, not the whole head. Other mechs have wider or skinnier Center torsos, larger or smaller legs, sides, heads, etc. Some mechs have fancy fins & spoilers like the Jagermech which result in easier to shoot hitboxes.
