So Friday night I was poking my nose into the PUG match Using my Hellslinger to grind some cash and was tapped to join a 4man group. I asked what Comm Channel.
"We're not on Comms."

Say again? Not on TS?

Yes, we were going to team up in silence. A new experience to me. I will admit I had my reservations, but was interested on how this would work out.

So we get our 1/1/1/1 for max return (pretty painless) I had even switched to my Hunchback for a minute, but was relieved to see Wolverine, so hopped back into my Beemer.

These guys typed like the wind Bullseye!

It was a little slower than Comms, but communication flowed. I just wish Maps were more forgiving to my Beemer!

The matches went as can be expected in the 12 man que, but we gave a good showing... Well my team mates did anyway.

It reminds me of doing PUG Guild Wars 1 PvP. If the group didn't have a TS/Vent server on reserve, you had to learn to type like the wind.

I'm from the wrong generation to be a good typing male!

I'm only 25, but I started playing MMOs around pretty young. So I was around in the pre heavy use of voice chat days. I find most of the people that really remember it are the EQ guys, and they're all mostly in the 30s now. Now let's band together, grab our canes, and shake our fists at those crazy kids who can type even faster with just their thumbs!

What ever works, but even if you are in a 4 man group. There are 8 other players that need to be told what's going on.
So I have to give my scout reports typed and voice.

I really wish PGI would come good on their promise of a Command wheel. When not pugging I use TS with the rest of my unit, but how many times have you been in a PUG drop and wished you could quickly communicate with the rest of your randoms?

I really think it would improve the level of gameplay if they implemented it.

All things in context my fellow geriatric pilot... all things in context.

While it's largely a situation they've created (deciding not to run comms) through necessity these teams do tend to be pretty good at conveying pertinent and contextual info via chat.

I've dropped with several teams by request who did not run comms and while not as "timely" as voice comms... I really never felt grossly impaired.

Bah, I'm only a few years younger than you Joe and I've lead Greenskin warbands in Warhammer Online while role-playing 100% of the time.

... although it's much harder in MWO because I'm usually in a light and can't really afford to take my hand off my mouse to type

Either way, and to get this back on-topic, it's amazing what just a little communication can do. You don't need to write novels, just "push A6 now", or "they're coming up the G line" is usually enough in PUGs.

Edit: Oh, and keyboard communication hot keys. We need them, where are they PGI? Just a few simple ones would do:
* "Enemy spotted in [grid location]"
* "Need assistance in [grid location]"
* "Target [target designation]"

These, and a few more, would do wonders for PUG communication.

Hey now, it's also useful in "Typing of the Dead;" that's single player. Your post made me chuckle remembering some of the slow typing programmers I've come across, great at formulating data structures and algorythms but hunt-and-peck typists. It drove me nuts.

I've learned to type fast because of being stuck without TS and VOIP for most of my life. (I'm 28) In my dial up days, it was nearly unheard of. I've been on the internet since the early to mid 90's, whether that be Bulletin Boards or "real internet," so I got my start younger than most.

I almost prefer typing, but TS does lend a personal side to teaming up, which is nice. Because you can't talk to the rest of the PUGs however, I'm fairly neutral. If a group wants to use it, I'm up for it. Otherwise typing fast is something I'm used to, and usually have to do anyway.

I never learned to type, but developed a 2 to 4-finger (and often 1-handed) system for myself and it's gotten pretty fast over the decades (but nowhere near as fast as a touch-typist).
