Any Way To Change The Sound Output Device Once The Game Has Loaded?

That is, when I load MWO, if I have my headphones selected as my PC's sound output device, I cannot change the sound output to my speakers... evening when I specifically change the output in the Windows Audio Control Panel.
The reverse is also true. If I I have my speakers selected as my PC's sound output device, I cannot change the sound output to my headphones... evening when I specifically change the output in the Windows Audio Control Panel.
Is there any workaround to this? At the moment, I have actual close the game and restart it just to change the sound output - time consuming and disruptive to whatever team I'm in.

For me i have the sound coming out of my speakers(during the day) and TS on my headset i just keep one ear uncovered so i can hear my speakers. for me this works out great as i can hear both clearly.
But at night when i have to set the in-game sound to my headset i need to lower the game vol n effects cause it can drown out the ppl on TS when they are talking.

hmm, thanks for that tip, I will have to give that a try. I know switching the Default Playback to another device doesn't do it but never thought to disable the other. I usually just restart my client

if you have unused weapon groups, set your gauss to those as well... 3 or 4 green squares is more noticeable then 1

Nice, I had no idea that I could do this. I'm most certainly doing it. It would be really helpful.

Hello from 2017 and this very basic missing feature is still missing.
Only major-label, top-tier computer game I have played in the modern PC era (i.e. since about 2000) that did not allow you to change the in-game sound output device. I don't know what to say about the fact that the in-game VOIP has this option but the game sound itself does not.
I want to have the stereo in my room playing (okay, blasting!) music of my choice, using my computer's audio player, while still getting the in-game sounds through headphones. I don't want to be amplifying game sound for my neighbors to hear, it's fine if they hear music but I'd rather not share the lasers and auto-cannons etc.
The option to just turn the volume setting for the in-game music all the way down almost gets me there, as far as substituting my own music, played over my stereo, for the in-game music. But I still have no way to put the game's UI sounds and battle sounds on headphones while still having the same computer play music over the stereo speakers.
Unless I intentionally lie to Windows, and temporarily disable the external audio output right before I start up the MWO client so that MWO thinks I only have headphones.
Seriously, in 2017, having to jump through a hoop like that still. I fully expect to hear from my 2021 self about the same problem still being there then.

BUT MWO requires me to switch it before I start the game. If I want to switch from speakers to headphones, I have to close MWO, switch, then restart MWO.
Still seems like an archaic requirement in the year 2017.

part of the reason is also the way windows handles default audio devices. it sets a device as a default. and if you disconnect that device, it reverts the default to another device and never gives it back to the one you actually want to be the default. i got some wireless earbuds that are fine for music but have too much latency for game audio, yet they keep stealing the default. this is why to get my voip headset to actually work takes some finagling. sometimes in the game and sometimes in the os.
also while there are settings for voip, there is no setting for the main audio device at all. and that doesn't play nice with my vr headset for example. i have to make sure that device is right before i launch the game, but it usually doesnt need the same finagling as the voip device does.
