Instead of going with a structured 3/3/3/3 system.. why not a mech weight +/- 10 tons?

The reason I suggest this is that there are certain mechs that fall into a range that is actually a determent to the side that they drop on. These are the 60/65 ton heavies, the 80 ton assaults, the 20 ton lights.

Doing this would allow for drops to pull in across class line without taking the time to 'rule out' the 3/3/3/3 system. In addition, the reason why I say 10 tons isntead of 15 is to keep the upper and lower extremes from taking the place of the current 'low end' of the weight classes. So, for example, a 100 ton would be matched, at a minimum, against a 90 tonner while a 20 ton would pull in, at a max, a 30 tonner.

If it could be combined with each player selecting a drop-deck of 1-4 mechs to give the MM more to draw from, it may work with keeping 3-3-3-3 but in addition also balance the total weight. That would kind of give some meaning to the lower end tonnages in each class?

The Victor's (Dragonslayer in particular) was always such a detriment to the team. Not to mention how much better the Orion is than the Cataphract 3D. ECM Spider is completely useless...

Ok, sarcasm off. Weight does not correlate that well with efficiency. A system that balanced crap mechs against crap mechs (Tier), trial mech vs trial mech, top tier vs top tier might... might work.

You know, I bring a stock mech to the fight, match maker treats me as a two tiers worse player. Oh well.

I don't know why they don't just take the 12 players who've been waiting the longest;

consider the first mechs tonnage and elo.
find the best match in tems of tonnage/elo
note any difference in tonnage/elo

consider the second mech +/- any differance from the 1st pair
find the best match in tems of tonnage/elo
note any difference.....

repeat till 12 pairs,

launch.

Because this is basically how it used to be and we ended up with all matches of 5 assaults, 6 heavies, and 1 light.

And while some people didn't mind, it sucked to try to pilot mediums and a lot of people complained that it was "immersion breaking" since real BT units tended to be balanced more toward the light/medium end of the tonnage spectrum.

Weight doesn't directly correlate to effective mech... however, there is a difference for those who wan't to drop in, say, a Dragon when they aren't inviting a Timberwolf to the party to do so.
