By team damage do they mean your teams damage as a whole or you accidentally hitting your own teammates for damage?

They mean when you accidentally hurt teammates

Ahyup.. there's a tip that pops up when waiting for things to load that reads something along the lines of "Be careful of your weapons as they can injure your team as well as the enemy."
