For the less maneuverable ones - such as the Stalker or Direwolf - I tend to sit closer to 50-50
(though my current DW builds use ~20 rear armor)
Edit: Reason being I know I am going to be taking several + blows to the rear on those

There are also some unique mechs that require special allocation due to hitbox geometry, like the Hunchback for example. It's front right torso hitbox is extremely large compared to the rear right torso hitbox. So I would allocate 2-4 points on the rear section, and the rest on the front for the right torso of all hunchbacks except the HBK-4SP since the 4SP doesn't have the hunch.

Avoid open spaces without something to cover your back. Use an improved seismic sensor on your Direwolf/Staker or on any sniper really. When fighting lights, put your back up against a wall. Light pilots want you to be out in the open trying to twist and turn to face them. Even a Direwolf can ruin a lights day if it catches it in the front arc so make sure you can always have that option.
You're better off hugging a wall wasting an enemy lights time than dying in embarassment to a Jenner.
Heres some examples of my preffered armor placement:
AS7-D-DC
STK-3F

THIS is the only right answer. Awareness will make up for a lack of rear armor. DWs need alot of time on target with their weapons so they will be getting hammered from the front VERY often. I run 4 armor on rear STs, and 8 on rear CT. Thing is even if they take out your rear armor you still have 66 points of internals (CT) and around 44 STs, so you have plenty of time before they get blown off to react to a threat on your 6.
Also use more rear armor(12+) until you fully elite them so they are more agile and able to react to a threat on your rear arcs. Also good teammates will protect you if you ask or are in a group, so even less rear armor is possible.
Lastly.. if you are new to the game dont go below 12-16 until you are more in tune with the game and thus more aware of your surroundings.

That gives me more hope for the future of mine.
Assault que has been full enough I have hardly taken them past Basics. (Hence my 20 rear)

for heavies I use 2-5
for mediums I use 2-5 (centurions i use 8, hunchbacks i use 1)
for lights I use 2.
I am a pretty good player and I am a competitive brawler. I always face enemies and if they get behind me they deserve the kill. The extreme front loaded armor allows my builds to almost always crush what is in front of me before my armor is open.

Well said, good tips right there.

Edit: Anymore than 5-10 on the back is kind of a waste in my opinion, because that's armor that could be used to help make that push.
Edit #2: Just saw you said specifically about Dire Wolves, if I remember correctly my armor distribution is about the same, maybe 8 armor on the back and rear side torsos. So pretty much completely front loaded.
