Selling mechs is PGI's bread and butter. Eventually, sooner than most people realize, they are going to run out of mechs with enough canon timeline variants.
Would it really upset people if PGI added an extra variant to some mechs that lack a third? If so, why is it okay for hero mechs but not for normal variants? If PGI wants to add a FLS-8S to the Flashman line to bring it into the game, why is that so terrible? I get that people are saying you can't just add things and say it's still Battletech, but BT has always had a customization aspect, and letting players use the full mechlab like MWO does now but not letting PGI add new variants is... well, it seems a bit crazy.

Nah, they've said they'll make up variants when that becomes necessary, but they're just sticking to timeline/variant appropriate mechs first. Once they run out of good candidates there, then they'll start fluffing the roster.

Been playing tabletop for a long time. Don't much care if PGI makes up their own mechs. But they should attempt to get them canonized. That said, if they fixed the dumb levelling system, obviously designed only to force grinding, they wouldn't need new variants. Also: They should just do the rest of the unseen.

It's far simpler to just remove the 'three variants' rule. No Battletech 'MechWarrior ever had to spend time driving the CN9-D and CN9-AL in order to get good with the CN9-A. In fact, many of them would never have had access to the other, less common variants.

I think its better to add variants in order to include a mech in the game, than to avoid a chassis altogether due to lack of variants.
regarding certain mechs being canonically unavailable during the game time period. Who cares? get them in anyway.
eventually we will doubtless end up with time jumps anyway to add 3051+ mechs.
