I am looking for a new medium mech, now that my Shadowhawks and griffin's are complete.

Now 2 mechs get my attention, the kintaro and the trebuchet. But i have NO experience with either of these mechs, not even in trail.

However both are barely seen ingame and thats why i am choosing for them.

So wich one is the better pick?

Not played Trebs but the reason you don't see to many KTOs is that they have a really bad rep amongst the community. I didn't know any different when I started so I went with them and died A LOT at first. You really need to play a very specific style with them. Or rather two specific styles - long range support or close range hit and run. Due to the hitboxes you cannot go toe-to-toe with anything other than a light. Having said that, if you stick to the cardinal rule of KTOs - always keep moving - you can rack up good damage and have a lot of fun. It's definitely challenging but I keep coming back to them even though I have lots of other mediums that are arguably easier to use. The KTO 18 is a great mech - a 5xSRM6 alpha is going to hurt anything - just don't stick around after! There's a great thread out there on Kintaros - hunt it down it'll keep you right.

Good luck!

Kintaro my a mile. The Trebuchet is simply too fragile. For generic LRMing the Kintaro tanks damage extremely well. I even have one that uses a 200XL and it lasts a lot longer than it should.

People run some interesting fast and or jumping builds on the Treb, but those don't appeal to me.

Use the Treb! Some have JJs all have missle energy and 1 has ballistic, when no kintaro can.

Treb 3C can take an XL390 and go 140KPH!

Treb 7K can have an AC20, and some 2 MLs.

The third one I would recomend s the Hero variant with 4 Missle and 2 energy, or the variant with 5 energy and 1 missle.

An XL 300-325 is optimal for most of the builds.

To put it plainly, the kintaro does nothing a Treb cant do, while the Treb can do 3 the Kintaro cant.
#1 JJs
#2 Ballistics
#3 go 140KPH

P.S. the Kintaro hero "Golden Boy" is about the worst hero there is.

Both are decent mechs. I have better luck with the Kintaro in a shoot and move style. Keep speed up and don't stop. Treb does well as medium to long range and use srm to go in for the kill. The golden boy is good running 5 ssrm and some lasers. Depends if you want to spend Mc

I've not played with either, but mobility is probably the biggest difference between the two. Are you a highly mobile player or not? If you are, you can manage with the Kintaros. If not, go with Trebs, as they're not as reliant for mobility to survive. I've just never heard of any good Kintaro builds or tactics that aren't very mobile, meanwhile for the Treb, there's a bit more variety in what you can do.

Can't comment on the Kintaro, but I'm a huge Trebuchet fan. One of the 1st mechs I bought. (maybe that explains my devotion)

With a 300xl, you will be doing 106 kph. The 3C can run up to a 390XL! I ran this weeks challenge mainly with the 3C and a 360xl engine doing 123 kph. As others have said, the secret to any of these medium mechs, is to keep moving, similar to piloting a light, but they will tank more damage obviously. Fast mediums are my specialty and I prefer the 50 ton weight class. They are cheaper to outfit than their 55 ton big brothers. All of the Trebuchet have positive quirk torso turn movement rates, plus range of motion quirks on 2 of the variants. JJ also set the Trebuchet apart from the Kintaro.

Listen to Dontor, he speaks the truth.

Jody,

I saw your name and had to post. Listen to this guy! I was a TBT lover from the get go and he took them to the next step. The 3M just became a hero mech for a reason - it's a BEAST! Fastest LRM boat on the market.

I don’t own a treb. I do own 3 KTO’s… I agree that they have a bad rap. Their hitboxes use to be horrible but were fixed. So anyone who says everything just cores you out in a KTO hasn’t driven a KTO since the change. Also the KTO can rock xl engines no problem which allows them to mount a lot of wpns. Danger in the KTO is that it is physically huge so you are not as “small” as other mediums and because of the amount of firepower you can mount people I think will try and use it like they would a heavy… bad idea.

I like my KTO’s they are great strikers-- you can also kit them out to kill lights or support your assaults heck you can even lrm boat if you really wanted too.

i own both and have done much better with the kintaros than the trebs. never really found a build i like with the trebs while my streaktaros let me take out those damned lights that always chew me up. i do have the 20 with a dual arlm 15 and a couple Mls that also does decent. the 19 and 18 are pretty similar in that both have 4 ssrms and 2MLs. the 18 i have an xl engine to break 100kph and an ASRM 4 to avoid the ghost heat on 5 ssrms. the 19 i have an extra ML.

the 3C is the only one i do decentish with 4 MLs and an ASRM4 i think (haven;t played it in a while), the K i have a UAC5, couple MLs and i think streaks- could be srms though. and i think the 7M(?) i have some ML TAG and a ALRM 15 with a JJ or two. tried different combinations (including every AC possible on the K) on all of them and have been underwhelming for me.

but i prefer the kintaros- pretty much use the 18 exclusively whenever there's a contest/tourney/whatever on the weekends and usually end up ranked in the 100-200 range pretty much every time. nothing spectacular mind you but i'd never get close to that in a treb

Treb-7K is the best c-bill AC20-platform available, extremely hard to disarm and very potent, can also work as a gauss+ppc sniper with XL280 engine

Treb-7M c-bill version of the hero,very good,use as a SRM-bomber or LRM-support. 3 streaks are kinda meh.

Treb - 5J is the best medium c-bill laserboat available, only downside being the low slung arms, great carry mech.

You should start with 7K,endo,ferro,AC20,2 medium lasers,4 tons of ammo and the stock 250 STD engine.

Kintaros are good but the hitboxes just hate XL-engines.

If you just want to use LRMs, either will do, but if you want a speedy striker with a small profile, trebs all the way. If you like the other trebs, the Loup de guerre is worth the money too.

Pretty much all of this is true excpet that Kintaros are superb with XLs they have quite small side torsos actually.

that bulgy thing above the armpit just invites incoming gauss+ppc fire,i have not piloted kintaros in 3 months, but i noticed that it is relatively easy to pop an xl in kintaro, its not ultra-easy,but cataphract tier easy.

I liked the Trebs, though I only kept 2 - the LdG and the 5J. On the 5J I ran 4ML, TAG and LRM20 with lots of ammo - LdG I swap between LRM5s and Streaks. They both jump.

That said, the Kintaro can mount 5 separate missiles and is a bit tougher making it a better streak boat. Kintaros can't jump though - but they are on my list of things to run.

I use both..... in much the same way.

I have SRM6 versions of each and LRM5 versions of each. Depends on your mood, and your lance your trying to run.
