It's a recognition of a worthy foe, like two knights catching sight of each other across a medieval battlefield, brandishing their standards, and charging to do battle.

Anyone who still pilots an Atlas these days is a hardened assault jock. Many of us have been grinding mechs to powder since closed beta, and through thick and thin we have stayed in the cockpits of our 100 ton death machines. No 6x PPC Stalkers, pop-tarting Highlanders, super agile Victors, or huge alpha Dire Wolves will dislodge us from our warhorse. We continue to plod across the battlefield, stalking our prey, ambushing the weak and unprepared, and punching holes in the enemy lines.

The sight of another Atlas pilot on the battlefield is a rare one. So many other mechs have tried to knock the king off of his castle. The meta has moved far past us, and there are newer, shinier horses for everyone to gallivant around on. Still, we persevere. Veteran war dogs dedicated to doing the impossible; tanking the enemy team and grinding them into powder at close range.

Unless, of course, the other Atlas is an LRM boat. Then I just laugh at the peasant in knight's armor and show him what a real warrior can do.

Bravo... I love this answer. That's all I can really say because it's almost too perfect. xD

I do love my Battlemasters. I even went so far as to put the SRM6 back onto my stock-weapons 1G. It's such an enjoyable challenge, especially when I kick the tar out of a meta Dire Wolf in a mech that requires 5 weapon groups to use effectively.

I put it back on, as a cool off weapon.

One of these days I'll buy a mouse with more than 3 buttons.

I actually only use one of the side buttons to my mouse. I find that pushing on the side of my mouse throws my aim off for presice shots, so I usually mount LRMs or SRMs to it. Weapons that don't require the utmost precision.

Two of my weapon groups are tied to Shift and F, respectively. Shift is for weapons I use in close brawls and turning battles that require pinpoint precision (no pushing on my mouse = no throwing my aim off) and F is usually for long range sniping weapons or LRMs that don't require constant attention to WASD.

For example, my AS7-D uses the following weapon groups:

M1 = Arm Lasers
M2 = AC/20
Mouse Side Button = SRM6
Shift = CT Lasers
F = LRM20

All of that super precise heat management and careful grouping lets me make up for my (relative to brawling Atlai) lack of punch by riding my heat curve closer than they can. Between that and my experience as an Atlas pilot, I've out-brawled more than my fair share of D-DCs.

I love this old girl.

I always stop when battling another Atlas..... call it respect for the fact we both are driving the baddest mech ever created and now we must destroy each other!

Its the way of the Samurai, respect, then death B)

I find that stopping in an Atlas is the quickest path to that death you speak of.

What can you expect. When the 2 Atlas's do finally find each other, there is simply no where, or way, to run. So it just takes a second for the 2 Pilots to come to terms with their situation. Then its "Brawl On CMF"... ;)

Most of the time it isn't two knights saluting that causes the pause when two Atlas find each other.
The Pause is really both of us saying "Oh $%^%".

We Atlas pilots are people of great honour. We strive to take the heat of fire for our teammates, and provide the punch to break through tight situations. We give them that feeling of invincibility while on the battlefield. In fact, if an Atlas pilot's Atlas isn't below 60% armor by the end of the match, or dead... he hasn't done his job. As for the dead part, that could also apply to unskilled or bad Atlas pilots.

The mark of a good Atlas pilot is an low/average KDR and a skyrocketed W/L ratio.

Knowing when to burn up your mech for the team is skill #1 for an Atlas pilot. A great pilot will know exactly when to charge in and buy his team ~10 seconds of freedom while the enemy team burns him down. Done properly, he'll be the only death on his team.

Well put.

I've lost track of all the times I've been behind cover with a lance or two, in a medium mech, and the nearby Atlas just turns to look at everyone else like "Well? What are you waiting for?"

Inevitably, I get tired of waiting, run out in my medium mech, the team follows behind and, if I'm lucky, they trample over my burning mech on their way to victory.

Nothing makes me sadder than striding past my cowering teammates, slamming into a weak enemy flank, going up in flames, and realizing they haven't moved out of cover, leaving a number of badly wounded enemy mechs still taking pot shots at them.

A single loss can be shockingly effective at forcing your team to action.

I once led the charge in a Lolcust, and my entire team decided to flood the enemy positions as I died... It was a glorious death. And wonderfully cost efficient.

For me the pause is caused by targeting delay and me lining up an alpha strike.

I would so buy a liquid metal Atlas/Centurion terminator skin.

Eh, I'm torn. The second you turn a corner and see another Atlas you realize that this is probably the last mech you are going to fight for the match.

Some epic fights happen, sure, if left alone, but chances are some (broken) SC or something will come along and rough-nonconsensual-buttsecks you to death while the pain is flying and you just can't ignore the Atlas.

PS: Don't freeking XL your Atlas.

We're part of the oldest breed. Remember, the only mechwarriors that consistenly declined Kerensky's invitation were the atlases.

Thing is, this special variant seems to have unique head geometry! What we die hard Atlas pilots want.
