The jab at Conquest is ill-informed. I've been playing it exclusively for the last month, mainly because 1) you get more lance vs lance action rather than the predictable murderball of twelve and 2) you get to fight in parts of the map you rarely see in other game modes.
But I would say about 20% of my wins are from capping points when the other team "won" at skirmish. So its not accurate to say the only way to when is to ignore caps and go kill. I still think killing is more important, and usually only cap to keep points at 2-3 or 3-2, but about 20% of the time you'll have 3-4 red team heavies plodding around while the lone Raven wins the game on caps.
As for the game-mode question, I prefer the randomness to keep the meta from getting too thick. Try to go for builds that are useful in multiple scenarios instead of excelling at just one. Or not, but if you are going to make that trade off, don't complain when you get maps/modes that don't cater to your meta-build. Its the risk that all powergamers should learn to accept.

I hate Skirmish because there are no objectives, and people can hide or play like a B**** pretty easily.

I play all 3. I sometimes turn off Conquest when playing assaults.
I liked the idea of turrets on Assault, but automatically beating ECM with LRMs and auto-spotting half way across the map was silly.

I don't hate any of them, they are all different and bring something to the game.
skirmish :- violence without thought, for the hell of it.
conquest :- have to get the right balance between caps and firepower, mobile play, to win your light pilots have to have a brain and your big units need to be mobile enough to bring fire power where its needed.
assault :- another fire power game, but one that takes brains, now turrets are gone, you can't afford to go to far from base and leave it open, so you have to preserve your faster mechs, or chose the point to try your own cap

I am playing them all again since they removed the turrets from assault. Skirmish is probably my least favorite of the three now.

The are all the same with 15minutes of thought about how to make the one mode different enough, without AI programmers worthy of the name on staff, to give each game a different 'feel'.
And all three fail to achieve that different feel
