With 240 tons per drop you can still literally pack nothing but heavy mechs. The standard mech size of the IS is 55 tons (griffon, shd, wolverine etc.) and mediums are the most common, so why not a slightly more conservative and lore friendly 220 total tons reflecting average space of 4x55.

ALTERNATELY

Give a CBILL BONUS for drop weight left open, a sort of personal handicap to grab for some cash. Make it percentage based rather than flat so players still have to go fight. Done.

They said that they would adjust it if they felt it necessary.

Although it WOULD be cool if bringing a 100-ton assault-class Battlemech meant not bringing anything else but, say, a commando. And yeah, being allowed to bring 4 heavies is silly. If they make the tonnage restrictions much harsher they could really bring back the idea that a mech like the Commando is useful because it's "cheap", or in this case very light. Because let's face it, an assault mech in the hands of an experienced pilot will completely wipe the floor compared to a light mech. Granted, the light has a chance of winning 1 on 1, but the Assult has a much greater chance of affecting the outcome of a match.

I say put the tonnage restriction at 150 tonnes. Longevity in battle (fielding lights / mediums) vs. single-mech performance.

I actually agree with the OP. I know there are a lot of people that think they should be able to bring 4 of anything they want.....But I would prefer that pilots have to make some hard choices...How badly do I want to bring that 100t Daka-wolf?

Personally I still would like to see everyone have to drop with a light / medium / heavy / assault AND meet tonnage requirements......But PGI have come-up with a pretty good compromise.

Would be pretty lame. There should be restrictions on chassis, though. You shouldn't be able to bring in 3 Mad Cat variants. 2 Mad Cats is 150t, then you have to deal with 1 60 tonner heavy and a 30 tonner light. Lawdy, I'd bring in a King Crab, a Grasshopper, a Cicada 3M, and a Raven 3L just to harass everyone.

I think that there is a logic with the OP's post. Medium and light mechs were the most common mechs throughout the Succession Wars because they were cheaper to produce. This should be reflected in the tonnage limit. I also think it is a good idea that the 3/3/3/3 should be followed for the team. This will eliminate the team that brings nothing but heavies into a match. This will take some coding and the MM might have kittens trying to sort it out.

On the "What 3/3/3/3 cost us" link in my signature, I give a Community Warfare scenario in which a planet is contested by two sets of attackers, the winning attacker sets up a defense and stakes the planet. Reinforcements come in waves. Lots of stuff.

But... There, it is 660 tons for the entire team to use. Some amazing stuff is doable, such as one team having 6 assaults. Another team brought 24 commandos and 2 spiders.

Of course this scenario assumed that you could bring up to 4 mechs for one player, but had to share your tonnage for the rest of the team, and that something like an Atlas consumed 3/20ths of your entire team's drop-weight.

Even so the main 'team' in this arrangement had 13 mechs at its disposal, with the Atlas being a 'final resort' to come into action late in the game.

At the end, "660 seems too exploitable so it may be a lower weight limit." Yet we're about to see 240 per player.

While I can reason that maybe say a 100 ton dropweight per player might be too low, remember this stacks up to "1,200 tons" per team. It would allow a player up to 5 Locusts, 4 commandos, 2 50 ton mediums, or just a single 100 ton mech.

I think the enemy team will be delighted if their opponents packed 4 dragons/quickdraws.

Mad Doge does have potential to be effective, albeit while losing one side.

Dragon has its limitations.

I think 240 is too low as it is so I am going to have to disagree. If they don't require everyone to bring 4 then it only needs to be upped to 245-250, but if they are requiring 4 mechs it needs to be 300 in my opinion. Allow us to take as many mechs as we want so long as it falls in the 245-250 max range and you can have a blend of 3/3/3/3 and Koniving's idea. As it is currently proposed 240 is low.

I'd love a c-bill bonus for 140 tons left floating because I only took 4 Death's Knell's to the battle field, but imagine all
the artillery/air strike spam that would occur due to c-bills not being an issue for whom who wish to troll in such
a manner

Do you honestly believe there won't be 24 arty/air in play at any given time anyway?

Sure, lower tonnage, but a repair bay lol....and even if it costs you your rounds earnings to use it, im sure it would be worth it to not get ur mech killed just cuz its been in battle longer and is now facing fresh mechs. Cuz really...your going to die eventually....

Too low? you are just wanting to play only heavy mechs apparently.

Honestly, MEdium mechs should be the ever present ak47 of the battlefield, and others should constitute a terrifying change from a norm.

Games like red orchestra gave most of their players bolt action rifles, so that the automatics feel special and cool. I think mech tonnage could be the same way. At least incentivize people to not always just use "best in category" mechs as much.

One reason why it is 240 might be to prevent people from bringing 3 Timberwolves and a Dasher (Whenever said Dasher comes out).

250 also means 2x Dragon Slayers, 1x Cataphract 3D, and a Locust.

(People say yeah locust but when you die and the enemy team has lots of exposed CTs you bring out the 4 MG locust and clean up) .

I'm fine with 240 to force the clammers to use their light mechs.

240 is fine. If anything, it's a little light, assuming that one wants to allow people to drop in things they enjoy. At 240, if you bring 2 Atlases you need to have 2 Locusts to go along for the ride. Talk about diametrically opposed play experiences...

And what about Clan players? Can't take 2 Daishis, since there aren't any Clan 20-tonners yet. Even after the Koshi goes live, that's still 10 tons overweight if you bring a pair of those. Make it 250 and at least then Clan players can do the 2x Daishi, 2x Koshi drop.

That said, you are entirely right about low drop weight bonuses. MechCommander did it, and it was awesome. Use a reward for low drop weight (say, 1k c-bills for every ton under the limit) to push overall weights lower. Mediums suddenly become a very strong option, as they get you a bit more punch and a bit more durability over lights, while also letting you slip under the weight limit enough to earn some decent bonus cash.

Elizander that is still an extremely heavy and expensive lance to justify in anything like a simulation or reality. 3/4 of a mech military were meds/lights and dropship should be the mode that enforces that.

Exaclty...and you can't mix IS or Clan because it's a CW mode anyway. I think that's correct.
