Is there any kind of rhyme or reason to the number of mech and weapon modules? They vary a lot even between variants of a chassis (SDR-5D vs SDR-5V, for example). Failing that, is there any kind of list somewhere for how many modules on each chassis?

Smurfy is indeed the correct answer! ;)

As for rhyme and reason. If a variant has less module slots it's usually better gifted in terms of the number of weapon slots and/or the type of weapon slots and/or the combination of weapon slots, or the ability to take ECM.

Or, to put it short: "OMG, number of module slots totes reveals teh ub3r mechzors!!!1!"

There is no precise formula, but it is generally due to some variants having fewer hardpoints than the others (including an ECM hardpoint, as you'll find on the Spider 5D but not the other ones) or tonnage (Dragons have more than other Heavies, 50 tonners tend to have more than 55 tonners, etc)
