- One for single players, also known as PUGs.
- The other for groups of 2 - 10 or 12 players.
11 players isn't possible in the group queue, as that would need a single player in this group. There are no groups in the single drops and no singles in the group drops.
So you are totally fine, dropping as a lance.

So 4 players could drop into a game and end up in a 12 v 12? Or would it be a 4 v 4?

A drop group can be any number of players from 2 to 10, or 12 (11 is not allowed because that would require adding 1 solo player)
All groups are in a queue together: the system does try to match larger groups vs larger groups, but if there is a group of 8 and a group of 12 in the queue, it will require a 4-man to join the 8-man group to compete gainst the 12. While a 4-man may not seem suitable to fight a 12, the 8-man is much closer in number to the 12 but it needs an additional 4 players. 2-mans like to complain ,but how else is a 10-man going to find a match?
The matchmaker does tries to match up group sizes and it tries to match up Elo (a sort of win:loss matching metric) but with relatively small queues (depending on time of day) you may find yourself against a match that's a bit out of your league as a small group. UIseit as a learning opportunity, communicate with the whole team (if you are a small group you are probably joining a bigger group!) and do your best.
There are many organizations and groups that would be happy to take you in if you and your friends wanted to join a larger unit so you can form larger drop groups.

If you drop 6v6, same thing.
You might get paired against a 12 man, but the MM tries not to.

12 man premades have a separate queue.
It's about as simple as that . There will always be 12 players fighting 12 players, but in different amounts (your 4 man might get paired against a 10 man and a 2 man).
Group queue include all groups, not exclusives. 12-man groups often getting against smaller formations when out of competition.

Full 12s will face smaller groups depending on group size bias, Elo bias, and wait times (wih longer waits giving less and less "even" matching) so at a time when there are few groups in queue, or few groups using all game modes, smaller groups may face unfavourable opposition from a full 12.

sorry David, you are mistaken, this used to be the case but the 12 man only queue was removed at the same time groups of above 4 were allowed
your group of any size could be placed against a 12 man, the matchmaker tries to put two 12 man groups together but cannot always do so, in my experiance it seems more likely for a 2-3 or 9-10 man group to end up against a 12 man than other group sizes (a 12 man can usualy be identified by 11 or more players having the same unit tag)
