When I watch the people on http://www.twitch.tv/ngngtv they say things like hotel for H and Juliet for J. Can someone tell me what all the call-outs are so I don't say something silly like Apple for A when I drop with others.

There is no hard rule on this, people mainly use the NATO alphabet but I've heard the US version as well, and people who seem to be making things up (especially for the higher letters, I've seen targets as high as P)

Many people in my unit are active/retired military, so we use those. As ling as it is clear, you shouldn't have a problem. The key to the military ones is that every word sounds different.

I remember that bug. Something with UAVs causing the designation of everything they spotted to increase I think. I believe it's gone now, but I've had to go as high as Romeo in the past.

NATO Phonetic alphabet, learn it, love it, use it.

P for peter A for Apple is just crap. Phonetics are used because the words in them are easiest to hear over a scrambled radio. is also helps in that NATO is a multinational organisation, the shape your mouth makes when formed the word corresponds the best with the sound the letter should make.

Apple is naff because it's awfully close to Papa.

Makes a good idiot spotter too... Always good when your LRM guy asks "ERMAGAWD WHAT LETTER IS ROMEO?!?!"

I haven't seen any target change designation (this was a really annoying bug for a while) in a long time, but you will still encounter mechs above L (possibly due to a turret being targetted before all 12 enemy mechs are targetted)

When calling targets it does not mater what you say so long as it is clear what letter you mean, e.g. I have on occasion called Helo for focus fire on H, this is bad because it sounds a lot like Kilo, the official call for K but if I said Hamburger that would have been fine because it is obvious what I mean

Phoenetic alphabet is the usual, but here's the version I learned in the army.

A is for All the Way
I is for In the sky
R is for Rough and tough
B is for Born to die
O is for On the go
R is for Ranger
N is for Never quit
E is for Every day

They told me those are all the letters you need because if you ain't Airborne you ain't ****! ;)

This is one area that most people that were or are in the military will understand. The best part is, it is international and takes into effect the linguistics for some other european languages. The phonetic language used in World War II and a bit after is not the same that we use now in the military due to adopting the Nato version.

We could use other systems, but why change what most people already know.

Plus have you ever seen a German speaker say Squirrel. I still laugh at that from one of my wifes friends just trying to say it. My sons have a hard time, but my wife does not for some funny reason. There are other words, but this is a good one to point out.
