If Nvidia doesn't have remaining stock of note, and I promise you that was what they were shooting for, there may not be a huge stock to discount in the first place. The 970 is also facing an often-dubious situation as far as being kept on shelves, so there's plenty of time to have people who want GPUs, can't find 970s, won't go AMD, and will pay up for a 780. It's certainly not going to be very many people, but maybe it doesn't have to be.
