My pet theory is that the dev team that built the original MWO build is long gone, and the ones we have now aren't up to the task of redoing anything that original team did.

Or it could simply be that nobpdy on the dev team actually everhad time to work on such a... let´s be honest... pointless (to the general public) feature. In fact if we go by Russ IGP pretty much only cared about getting more meat in to the grind... And the meat does not use a Stick... Sorry.

Maybe once they get CW out the door and take care of the backlog.

Its not the engines fault, it is the programmers faults, MW:LL had decent joystick support and it was on cryengine. Blame the programmers that got lazy and hurried bugged ****.

Cryengine 1 and 2 had great ****** joystick support.

I haven't tried joystick in MWLL, but I suspected all along that there is nothing so especially bad about the engine itself, it's just PGI and many people on forums blame the CryEngine in all the faults of MWO.
Too bad that good IPs fall in the wrong hands more than often...

I used to outduel keyboard/mouse players using my HOTAS setup in Mechwarrior 4 Mercs.

once Joystick Support got decent in MWO, I attempted to use it... and it just doesn't work. One of the things I noticed is because of the nature of lasers here, you simply cannot do the kind of damage you need to with the DOT lasers.

That was one of the things I relied on in MW4, was taking snap shots as I ran past with my lasers, thus vaporizing armor in an area as I've already passed you. You just can't do that in MWO due to the nature of the weapons.

I guess it works okish for ballistic and missile weapons, but joysticks just do nothing for lasers.

And yeah, I was excited for the Artemis... shame it never came out.

Joysticks in MW4 made it so you could pilot a Nova Cat prime and NOT melt your self on every volley.....in that game I think by default all the guns are linked....who the heck would link fire 2 CERPPC and 3CERLL?

Once I had a Joystick in MW4, made playing the game insanely easy. The ability to separate my weapons into 6 groups made it insanely easy to drive energy based mechs. and in that game, given that lasers have instant travel time, they became my favorite weapon. LL, ML, some SSRM6 action for close range face punching....fun stuff..

Why did IGP get fired from MWO? That must be an amusing story.

Creative differences as it is called. PGI felt that IGP did not do a good job as a publisher of the game so they bought it back form them. Now PGI have full control to do as they like with the game... For better or worse =)

In short it is IGP´s fault that the second delay of the CW happened as they refused to fund working on it. They wanted to focus on a new player experience first.

I run circles around the Mouse users in MWO and the dead give-away that you are facing a Mouse pilot is when they ram into you out of desperation at close range.

This game is not joystick/throttle friendly, thus, sadly, no razer controller. If they toned mouse down significantly in usefulness, then maybe... But I don't see that ever happening.

I don't know you guys, but I play to have FUN, immersion is FUN. So I am just waiting the oculus rift thing to set-up my joystick here... And yes, I will be using pedals for torso twist :)

Mouse is more precise than sticks, sure, but you can still kick ass with a good stick or even joypad, its just a matter of practice.

Joystick is on the comeback with all the new space-sims and MWO. If you build it they will come. That's all it ever was. The Mouse sucks for Mech games and Flight Sims, we all know it. I run circles around the Mouse users in MWO and the dead give-away that you are facing a Mouse pilot is when they ram into you out of desperation at close range.

Razer Artemis wouldve been way more viable if it had a steering wheel instead of a joystick.

You can make an excellent argument that the joystick is the best controller for flight sims (assuming they have no WT/WoWP style fly by wire systems), but the fact is that the joystick is just not competitive in any situation where precision aiming is a huge advantage. The only place in this game where analog control is going to be better than a mouse is for turning the legs of the mech.

What's funny and sad is I can load up any 10+ year old MechWarrior game and the joystick functions works great very compatible but a brand new game engine and game MWO wont correctly support any joysticks I have tried and function very well in actual gameplay.

The interesting thing is that aircraft games are in the exact same boat.

I can play dogfight games from the 90' that have perfect joystick controls, load up War Thunder and you are hard pressed to stay on your target, fly without a huge amount of wobble, and on and on.

basically it all comes down to everything is a FPS just skinned to deceive you into thinking you are playing something different.

Tank games, just slow FPS
Airplane games, Just an FPS in the sky
Mech game, a different slow FPS

I would assume it is because most game developers stopped making pure PC ENG based games in the 1990'S and started making PC games ported over from Xbox/PS2-3 engines. Almost all modern game engines are for Xbox-PS4 ETC. first PC second which sucks if you want to make a PC MechWarrior game.

There are obvious differences between the stick and the mouse and each has a set of pros and cons but clearly MWO does not favor stick play. This is a developer choice, not a limitation of CryEngine. Not to discount the differences or benefits of either I feel this thread is missing the commentary on gaming culture. We all remember the awesome SIMs of the 90's, these were the Salad Days of gaming and Joysticks. Back then it was ok to sell 100,000 copies of a game and in that context it isn't outrageous for developers to assume the target audience has the necessary equipment. Now and especially with the F2P model developers need to address a wider audience and market in a way that constantly appeals to the largest audience, in this case it would be unwise to hinder potential customers with hardware requirements. On a budget it has to be much more difficult to justify superior joystick support when you also need to appeal to a demographic larger than just the HOTAS crowd.

My point being that it doesn't matter if joysticks are great or not, the fact that they aren't a common peripheral will translate into less developer resources at most studios right now.

This is a rather presumptuous statement.

Most people I know that play PC games, (which last I checked MWO is only a PC game) have numerous different peripherals.
Most have $60-$100 keyboards, $60-$100 mice, $30-50 controllers, and $40-150 joysticks.

Also people will buy whatever is needed to play a game they enjoy whether it be a f2p game or a title you outright purchase.

Choosing to not support a peripheral is a choice the developers make, which can have drastic circumstances all of it own. If people look at this game and want the joystick expierence and fail to get it, that is a lost customer period.
What input you use as a player is just as important as the UI or Content is.

I would rather play with a joystick like the days of yesteryear, but I have come to accept in this day and age everything is just about k/b and mouse.

Yes, the modern PC gamer just happens to have a joystick and full hot ass setup sitting around for when he wants to play the latest steam shooter offering, or do some heavy crysis binging on origin.

As we all know, popular games like DOTA and league are expectionally great when played using controllers, but arcade sticks might add a certain flair to the gameplay. Coincidentally, did you know that team fortress 2 is best played with a rift, twin joysticks, pedals, and voice attack?
