O_o. 8Q 275 xl....... 8Q with a 275xl...........why? WHY?
I saw this and thought "why would anyone do this?"
You are asking to not only go slow, or be easily killed because of the XL, but if you put both together, well, congratulations, you've just become easier to kill than a MED LASER TURRET.
look, as an awesome pilot let me tell you that you need to abandon your ways NAO.
Awesomes are fun mechs, even though they are low tier mechs currently, they can be fun and work if done right. 275 xl is doing it wrong. And I'm open to weird and non conventional builds.

P.S. The XL engine costs DHS's. That 4 PPC 3 ML build is a hot mess (24% HE). No point in having all that weaponry if you can't fire it, at least quasi regularly. Lights will eat that alive...

Also, Awesomes are incredibly tanky now with that CT armor bonus.
Seeing that loadout is a dead giveaway that you're running an XL, and thus you're going to live half as long against a skilled opponent.
Don't get me wrong, I still run my 9M with an XL400 on occasion, i actually found that the 3x PPC 2xML with a 275 STD is now as good with heat as the XL400 build, even though that XL400 lets you cram more DHS, the new Energy quirks more than make up for it.
I run XL's in all inner sphere assaults including teh fatlas.
If I suffer premature mech destruction from a side torso hits, it only means I need to learn to torso twist better.

The issues you highlighted regarding the deficiencies of the aws chassis are exactly why pgi acknowledges they are tier 5 mechs. Well see how they fare after the IS balance pass coming up. I personally don't see a higher engine cap as the cure, the 9m and pretty baby have high caps and can both go over 85, but they aren't much better.
Two PPC's is what I might run in a shadowhawk.
What's the point in having an awesome that is slower, a bigger target & 30 tons heavier if your loadout doesn't allow you to outgun a medium mech? A nova might run 2 PPC's and 5 ER medium lasers and have you outgunned.
The thing with medium lasers on an awesome is, for brawling you'd probably want a standard engine. It'd be too easy to lose side torsos at close range for XL engine. The limited engine size doesn't give you a fast turning rate, only two of your energy hardpoints are on the arm. The rest are torso mounted which makes it more dificult to hit things at close range.
That type of small standard engine, slow turning radius, few hardpoints on the arms arrangement isn't the best for brawling. If you wanted to brawl you'd use a victor. If you wanted to boat lasers you'd use a stalker. Brawling with medium lasers on an awesome doesn't make much sense if you think about it -- there are other mechs that fulfill that role and do it better.

I would much rather have an XL engine in an awesome than use a direwolf or timberwolf and deal 500-1000 damage and 4 kills in almost every game.
Its too easy to pile up wins and kills using the same generic rides everyone else uses.

300 works for me.
The reason I bring up the topic has to do with there being nothing that distinguishes the awesome from other assaults. Normally the lighter tonnage mechs of a class have a speed advantage. The cicada has a speed advantage as a medium. The commando and locusts have speed advantages over other lights. The dragon has a speed advantage over other heavies.
When we get to assaults the victor has a speed advantage over other assaults and the awesome has nothing.
In that sense, it could represent a natural progression to give the awesome the capacity to mount bigger engines as the light mechs of other classes have to compensate for their limited armor and hardpoints.

The hardest thing about using an awesome with PPC's and an XL engine is hitting anything with PPC impulse nerfs.
XL engine in an inner sphere assault isn't as big a deal as people make it out to be.

Its funny that the left arm has an actuator and no weapon hardpoints. I guess its the melee punching arm?
Oh, I can fire it. I put 4 PPC's to someone's face at least once in every game. Its a good feeling. Even if it happens at 900-1000 m where I only get a fraction of the dmg.
Sometimes, I fire 2 PPC's and they poke their head out from cover thinking I only had 2 PPC's & I hit them with the other 2. Its hilarious.

i drive mostly awesomes i must have 7 awesomes some of the same variant but different loadouts, the only one that has an XL engine is the awesome that relies on brute firepower, the 8r, because you can use the extra weight to add more firepower.
i didn't like my 9m with XL engines either. in most awesome builds you can use an STD engine honestly, only the hottest, highest alpha 8r will need xl engine.
i was running the laser 8T with XL too, and i succesfully downgraded to STD, but for the 8r srm sledgehammer, the XL version often outplays the std version of the same mech, with the same firepower, only the XL version has ER ppc instead of PPC and better heat eff. despite the ERPPCs! so it REALLY pays off. some people will tell you PPC is just as good as ER but those people are clowns

My 8Q build uses 2x PPC and 2x ERPPC.
The thing is, its not about outgunning a smaller 'mech, its about being able to bring your firepower to bear on your target *constantly*
Sure, a SHawk with PPCs hs a similar damage profile to my 3x PPC 9M, but my 9M can fire those all day long and never come close to overheating, but the SHawk would get, what, 2 shots out before reaching heat cap?

Remember... Friends don't let friends XL assault mechs*.
*Except for maybe the Victor...definently not an Atlas.
