The Highlander is a bad chassis and you are probably doing your team a disservice if you launch in one.

OK, so took the time to put in the mechlab

One advantage the PPC has over the Large Pulse laser is that you have to lead the target similar to the ACs... so it usually will hit with the ACs and do pinpoint damage. Plus, when u are fighting that Atlas DC the PPC drops the ECM enabling you to use your lrms. So, I prefer PPC with this build but each to his own... enjoy the "Iron Maiden" build :)

LOL You think that because you can only fight in a dire wolf probably :)

Sold mine so I wouldn't inflict a fairly average Assault on my team

Due to the jump jet nerfs HM is average now.

Ive seen couple of good ones, usually they play like laserboats, corner peek-a-boo or close range support for the main brawlers.
2 AC5 3 LL seems to be a popular build.

Love, will never sell it, I'm starting to push 1000 matches in it alone. It is, however, a sub average mech. You have to invest to much tonnage into the jump jets to make them really work, like 3 jump jets and more like 4 or 5, which is up to 10 tons on that alone. That combined with the jump jet agility nerf took away any ability to actually be "agile" in this mech. It takes just to much burn to add any real height or turn bonus.

Please fix PGI, I love my Highlander and want her to be competent again. Especially in CW where I'm not only taking up an assault slot, I'm soaking up 90 of my 240 tons to try and play it....

This uses an XL 330 engine.
(Skip to 5 minutes; unless you want to hear some UI 2.0 rants)

Instant action

12-man versus 12-man. (It didn't record my mic.)

Watch the first score (excess of a thousand damage + lots of kills), then skip to 6 minutes to watch how I get yet another thousand and a crapload more kills while leading the charge against every enemy I see AND giving commands on the battlegrid.

A 100% DPS build.
Armor loadout, ammo loadout, etc.

Personal favorite score

Reason: One of last two mechs left. Solo play at a time when groups could still be in the standard-queue. Last two kills were done with one arm, one leg, and all three torsos rubbed raw and orange internals.

For various reasons (that seemed good at the time) I chose the Highlander as my first assault mech. Been playing the Heavy Metal now for a few days in it's original configuration, and I'm enjoying the versatility. It's a generalist that can fight both close-in and distance, though perhaps neither really well. I'm sure I'm scoring significantly less damage than a more specialized build, but I'm having fun, and that's the point, right? That said, the stock XL275 is really slow, so I'll probably jettison some of my JJ's and maybe the SRM to upgrade to a larger engine.

Just a few of my own toughts about Heavy Metal:

If you ever choose XL engine for HM, dont settle for anything less than XL330. Otherwise ,STD300 or STD315 work well,

If XL always go max speed (65 kph with tweak and XL330) AND some brutal firepower to compensate the reduced durability.

Very few mechs in MWO can mount such firepower in arms only, arms that have agility of medium class mech. Huge alpha or DPS, whatever the build you choose.

If you dont target weak components with this mech , you are doing it wrong. Precision is its only advantage over other 90+ ton mechs.

If XL, play the mech as a slow hard hitting medium class mech, dont tank with XL, unless you are fresh against a wounded mech.End-game is yours if you survive long enough. Dont brawl fresh brawlers, ever.

Dont go into sniper wars with specialised snipers, choose weaker victims instead. Use corner shots with 1 arm only to minimise exposure in early game.

In 1 on 1 engagements, use your armor and firepower to prevail. Demolish that Phrakt/Timberwolf/Victor/etc...
Dont go 1 on 1 staring contest with Crabs, Atlases and Direwhales. Outmanouver them instead, attack them
from a high position they cant aim their torsoes at...

Im running 2xAC5 3xLPL XL330 16DHS 1JJ.

I'm really struggling with this mech. So why do you love it? What are its strengths and how do you use them. Some loadouts would be nice also.

To me it feels way to cumbersome. My Atlas feels like a centurion compared to this thing. I think it's crying out for a 350 but that's not an option.

Thanks for your time. Don't forget to turn caps off. :P

Ahahah! I'm not a Heavy Metal pilot, but that thread hook made my day. I find the Highlanders playable, but not outstanding due to the jump jet nerfs - I feel like I'm being hoisted up by a crane, not rising into the sky on wings of fire. Jump jets are more of an experimental hill climbing system on that chassis, even with max jets. Still, there are a lot of people out there with more experience with Highlanders than I; I simply had to give you credit for the epic troll.

I was just going to point out that you seemed to have missed the Locust.

I dusted off my Heavy Metal for a few rounds and found it quite playable with 2xAC5 (5 t ammo), 3x LPL, AMS (1.5 t ammo), 15 DHS, and an XL330. I might try Dagon's build with the extra DHS and JJ

EDIT: Just tried it with the jump jet. It's not even remotely worth it.

This one's kind of fun:

2AC5s, 2LPLs, and 1 ERLL for some long-range poking. All your weapons are in your arms, so you might want to forego the LPLs for SRMs, but I do love my LPLs.
