If you read the novels, virtually all autocannons are described as firing in bursts. The whole single slug thing really just came from an interpretation of the TT rules that puts all AC damage in a single location.

The flufftext in the technical Readout 3025 about the Atlas says that his LRM 20 fires four salvos of 5 missles. Why ? Because the original artwork of the Atlas has had only 5 tubes over the left hip, and the game designer who designed the Atlas after the drawing decided to define them as LRM 20.
And if you read the novels, you know that all pilots with the name Morgan Kell can't be hit by Weapon fire. ;)
But novels and flufftext from a boardgame supplement aren't good basics for a video game.

To be honest, most of the Battletechnovels have only a small relation to the boardgame, and it seems that most of the authors never ever have played a game of Battletech.

There was also a major paradigm shift within FASA at some point that really drastically redefined the BT universe so there's a lot of inconsistency. For example in the early days the universe was envisioned as an uber-gritty, nearly post apocalyptic setting in which battlemechs would fight over resources as simple as water. At the same time if you read the earliest novels, battlemechs were described as having a sort of agility that's closer to Macross than what we know as BT today, with mechs performing diving shoulder rolls, side-skipping incoming enemy fire, etc. As we approach the Clan era, we see things in the universe becoming much more civilized, but at the same time battlemechs became more of the lumbering tanks we know and love.
