Hopefully it's that simple.

So I just tried to make it again with several different name/tag combinations -- all said a unit by that name already exists.

The only suggestion I have... use small letters instead of caps. You might have a shot there.
There is a "problem" on how the game considers things as "distinct" for tags... caps and small letters are "distinct" (at least for the purpose of computer storage). See if that makes a difference.

Maybe it's just me, but if all we're talking about is a name change (i.e. the unit has been created, but the name isn't right), then why isn't this a 10-second database change for someone? I mean, I know systems can be more complicated than they seem, but as an application developer, I'm baffled why something this trivial is even an issue. Why would you have to wait for an interface for a change this simple?
Granted, maybe I misunderstand the problem.

Well the issue with ELP for instance. Falls on PGI.
We had the corps created, PGI made the corps, however they never assigned any player to the unit. Thus the unit is created, and exists, with a name and tag and all, but there is no one existing within the unit. because of this apparently it's seemingly impossible to disband the unit.

I imagine the tool they said was coming is a user-friendly way of making those DB changes.

Here is my pretty please with a glowing AC20 on top hope we can get our unit names. I'll even have my favorite beer store order Peche Mortel's imperial stout.
