Seems like they picked the wrong engine to make this game. Loads of coding difficulties, limitations, and slow development. Not saying its their fault these little issues are still here, I know they are probably working as hard as they can, but I mean if this was in an easier game engine to code for it might be easier for them to push stuff out.

It's partly their fault. Cryengine is a beast when utilized properly, but it's a b*tch to learn fully.

What could help to fix some of our problems is upgrading to a 64bit client. Instead of being capped at 4GB of memory total, we would have effectively unlimited resources to run the game.

Great Feature suggestion! I for one would love a rear view camera, for understanding when I'm stuck on terrain. The only common sense shold be never stand directly behind a mech you are not in voice communication with, I cannot count the number of times I have been killed because my retreat has been blocked by a "teammate".

OP: Same reason why we build 10 meter tall men just to have 80% of them shoot from their knee-level from knuckle-dragging arms.

Because they aren't a new 2015 Buick :)

I think it is because the HUD is pretty packed as is. A reverse window that was big enough to use would obstruct too much of what's going on.

Maybe if you were in 3PV, walking backward could swing the camera around 180 degrees and show behind you. That might be a descent alternative.

I'd say nothing is impossible. If having a picture-in-picture is too resource-intensive for the engine, just find a solution:

1) Why not make the rear-view camera update at only 1fps? Then you only loose 1fps from your regular view and you get a nice old-fashioned analogue camera feel. (feel free to add distortion, filmgrain and scanning effect)

2) Don't render the rear-view camera like the rest of the game, but only render a wireframe image, like something you would get from a radar.

3) Make rearview another view-mode like heat- or night-vision.

And if you can do that, than we could also have missile/uav/foot/weapon-cams, they could be quirks or modules, how awesome would that be!

We kinda have rear view, just press F4. You immediately see if someone is attacking you from behind, and you can also see obstacles and stuff like that. And best of all, you can still see what's in front of you!

Rearview would make your computer have to render the game at your current graphics twice so you could see it. Not a problem for higher end cards, but for people on the other side of that, it would be low graphics or stop playing.

surely they can just use the advanced zoom code and apply it to the rear
it only needs to pop up when in reverse

obviously this would disable adv zoom, so either make it so pressing adv zoom key again toggles it off until you reverse again
OR
have a key to disable the function

i think some sort of rear view needs to be looked into
even if it does turn out to be a but resource intensive it can still be added and just be switched to OFF by default
thus people with potato pc's can still play the game .... if you call what they are doing playing
not developing a feature because some of your user base cannot use it is the poorest argument i have ever heard
especially since we already have low/med/high/ultra settings for everything else

lastly, if the rear view only turned on when in reverse then it would not invalidate or affect sneak attacks in any way shape or form, if you get shot in the back and hit reverse to see who did it, the sneak attack has already been successful and thus game play will not change in that regard

+1 for joystick and FreetrackNoIR.

Oh and speeking of "modern" concepts for a mech/game how about some VOIP already, most games have this capability since 1994.

Self explanatory question we have these super advanced fighting machines that can't see behind them when backing up? I mean really? shite the modern car has a mirror or reversing camera, now im not talking about 360 degree view here just when you hit reverse in your mech you need to have some way to see what's behind you so you don't get stuck on terrain or as is the most prevalent other players.
Is this going to happen and if not why not?
Something about rendering from 2 perspectives makes Rear view...cumbersome.

That's why I think having the camera in 3PV mode swing 180 degrees and show behind you when you back up is better.

It might be more cumbersome if in the heat of battle, but an image showing behind you in an already cluttered HUD isn't going to be all that great either *shrug*.

Plus it would be easy for PGI to add.

It's a feature to allow mechs to be cored from the rear. Watch the paper doll graphic of your mech to see if you rear armor is being hit. Adv. Seismic Sensor is good too.
