Agreed that there are some pretty plagaristic things going on here. Thought it was original artwork not mechs painted over already famous works.. Will know better next year..
Great contest regardless. Enjoyed making my piece from scratch even though it didn't win or get mentioned, had like 6 easter eggs pertaining to MWO maybe they were too subtle..

That one is obscene, I thought, and many others mentioned how great the figures were and the artists thanked them.. Only problem is, he didn't paint nor draw them... C'mon folks, be honest and don't steal others work.. Really un-ethical.

I also find disappoint that the third prize went to a Fafnir paste on this image (still well made, but not a heavy work), instead of a full work like ResidentCrow's Punisher-UrbanMech.
Ho Ho snap!

Is RomeoMustDie the owner of this, or he just wrote "Family game" on it? I can find the original picture in other places, like here and here.

If you are going to review the winners, please consider some entries of people who really put effort in this, like the ultra-scary Solahma's video and the creative Fherot's pervert Atlas.
EDIT: my mistake, the Solahma's video is already one of the winners.
I was mentioned, so I think, I should clarify situation from first-hands.
At first, please, read once again the Contest rules.
Done it?
OK.
Note please, the official statement: "Whether you want to create a painting, a photoshop, a stencil, a costume, a recording, a video, or even a scary Atlas cake:"
So, all kinds of creative forms are allowed.
QUESTION:
Must I doubt the ownership of some winners?
ANSWER:
Yes, you must.
QUESTION:
Was this picture made by my hands?
ANSWER:
Yes, it was.
QUESTION:
Was it done from scratch?
ANSWER:
No, it wasn't.
QUESTION:
Does this counts as a contest entry?
ANSWER:
Yes, it does.
Never ever I stated, that I was an exclusive and original author of these pictures.
I mixed them, layered them and the result is my own vision done by my hands.
Imagine a good song.
And for any kinds of reasons, you've made a cover of this song.
What matters, is not the authenticity of your cover, but how good it was made.
For example, i love this cover much better, than the original:
Hope, your doubts are are dispelled :3

Looking forward to the next one and the updated rules/categories.
I think derivative works are cool and all but should absolutely credit the source in the submission.

Sorry Mekanik but I'm going to agree with this statement... I was also surprised to see something get 3rd place for being purely other people's work.
I have read the rules again, and it does state: "Entries must be your own original work."
Now I know that you argue that since you put 2 original works together in one picture it is an original work... but what I can still remember from my varsity days tells me otherwise. You have to at least somehow make it your own, not just paste them together.
The mech in that picture is also easily found on the internet, I think it traces back to a deviant art member. And as stated before the pumpkins pic is also someone else's original work. So this is 50% one guys, 50% another's, 0% your own.
I have no stake in this, my entry was a joke entry, I simply feel there are other people who get penalized when they have original work...

But if the content of the image is purely someone else's work such as the costume then thats plagarism.
Well, there is also copyright laws on artwork. I know this is very dependent on which country you are in etc. But usually the laws will be something in the line of this: http://www.photolaw....-copyright.html
There are also copyright laws on derivative work, which in most cases prevents you from modifying the original work and claiming it as new or your own.
It is not my intention to complicate things... I just think that with so many people going to the effort of hand drawing things and providing good creative original work, lazy entries and copyright shouldn't be rewarded...
I'm not saying they should be accused of copyright infringement by PGI or something, but at least do not recognize it to the extent of giving it a 3rd place prize

That's true and the problem lies not only on the rules, but mainly on the jury decision and criteria. Photoshoped work should be accepted but it should be a whole new concept rather than using some overlaying two pictures and using most of the original art.
In my point of view, acceptable photoshoped creations based on existing artwork should be in light of re-interpretations or should make resource of dozens of different sources in one image. And the example of the cover version of a song isn't the same. The cover song was actually played, produced, sang, edited and mastered in a separate process WITHOUT using the original's song material. It's just like Alex when he does his interpretations of old battletech designs, or when a famous work of art is rebuilt using only trash or mechanical parts as in a collage. Its a whole new work in homage to a previous creation and author. Machinima is another good example of re-using something in a complete different and legitimate way.
Also, not citing the sources for the used material (especially with such a heavy weight on the final arrangement) should also be considered plagiarism.
Besides these issues, congratulations to all those who devoted effective hours, skill and knowledge. It was a pleasure to behold such entries and I hope these contests are held more frequently in order to promote all these amazing talents we saw here.
