After reading some of the recent threads about Quirks. I started to remember what got me into BattleTech/MechWarrior in the first place. It actually, had very little to do with the BattleTech universe. It had much more to do with the ability to create something within the rules that govern that universe.
No where in the Table Top Construction Rules does it say your Mech has to look anything like the Mechs in the BattleTech universe. It just has to operate within the same rules they do. Mods in a MechWarrior video game I was told about would let you create a Mech to look however you want it to. I think it was a mod for MechWarrior 2. Which ever early game allowed totaly open customization.
Another part was the way the BattleTech universe is within the realm of possibility. It allows for much deeper immersion.
Customization is a great thing to have in a game. But, what I ultimatly long for is one that allows for Mech Creation. Only mods have allowed games to come close. The Devs for MWO have mentioned that they are open to the idea of creating new Mechs from scratch. But, that is ONLY after they have used up all of the other Mechs within the BattleTech universe. They may even allow player creations by that point.
Side note: Another Table Top game called Mechton is also one that allows for the full creation of Mechs. They just have to operate within the rules of that universe.
Did anyone else have a reminder of what got them into the BattleTech/MechWarrior games recently?

One of my buddies in High school brought a copy of his Mech Warrior second edition paper back, and said to me "hey Meteus We should run this for our next campaign..."
So I borrowed the book, and read through it, and fell in love with Clan Ghost Bear's uniforms, that let me into looking into battle-tech, and the video game MW2 had just come out... so yea, history...

I like the genre. Big stompy robots of course. But they aren't doing weird ****. Reading the books, it's like the 20th century warefare all wrapped up in gritty reality.

My first experience with BT/MW was actually getting a K'nex Mad Cat for Christmas one year, while I was in elementary school.

Then I moved on to play that one Xbox game that 'shall not be named,' and soon enough I picked up a Mechwarrior PC game (Mechwarrior 4: Vengeance) and got hooked. Then I got the MW4 Mercs expansion, the sequel to that one Xbox game that shall not be named, MW3 (including Pirate's Moon), and eventually caught wind of MWO. I also have a small collection of the Dark Age Clix miniatures because of reasons (I don't ever actually play them against anybody, just have them for coolness reasons and things).

Ah MW3, I have fond memories of the last mission, using a Timber Wolf, gutted of everything I could, crammed with 4 Artemis LRM 20's with a targeting computer, and coring the Dire Wolf in one volley...

Damn I am old. I almost bought a copy of BattleDroids.

For me though, it was the pic of the Warhammer on the cover. Didn't like Robotech/Macross all that, so didn't even recognize it. But damn it looked cool and is still my favorite mech. But I was young and broke and couldn't by a game just on looks. Played a few games when possible with friends and enjoyed it.
Then someone ran a Mechwarrior campaign and I was totally hooked.
