Sometimes, I see people run up the ramp on HPG, crest enough to shoot, and then reverse back down. On some mechs this can be done pretty quickly with high-mounted weapons, but it still takes a moment to stop and reverse, and you're momentarily a stationary target.
If you don't plan to commit and go up the ramp and shoulder up next to the pillars for cover, then it's better if you run up the ramp diagonally to get off your shot. Make your run toward the edge where you wanna drop off, get to the point where you can clear your weapons to fire, get off your shot, and then swerve off the ramp and drop off the side of the ramp. You remain a laterally moving, turning target throughout the shot, and MWO's exaggerated mech-gravity will pull you off the edge of the ramp and into safety in a hurry.
Hope that helps some newer players.

That is, without doubt, the best way to attack the top of HPG, even with high-mount weapons. In addition to being able to drop to safety more quickly, you are also moving across and enemy's line of sight, rather than straight back. This makes it more difficult for him to hit you. A good pilot may still get in a snap shot before you drop, but poorer pilots may fail to hit you at all.
