Its situational for the most part. A lot of times its just point and click, some times it Snap shots, others BRASS.
Aiming here is really a lot easier than on a range or in a field.

Make something like a triple UAC5 / AC5 jaeger and plenty of ammo. Then just shoot at everything, that could get you used to leading a target properly with no heat issues.

There are some people with a natural talent for hitting someone regardless of there speed or there target, i am not one of them. Lets say i am going to fire a ppc, i know if i miss there is a huge heat penalty plus the time to recharge, so i save my shots till i am pretty sure it hits. Now doing so i may not be getting the kills or damage i could potentially get. Now you may say why even fire a ppc, it sucks. Well even if its a ballistic there is a penalty of using ammo and recharge time.
So the question is do you shoot at anything that moves, giving it your best estimates or save you shots for when you think you will be successful?

after some training

it just happens, but then there are times where listening to my feelings fails and I miss like 6x in a row.

If I see a target and if a teammate hasn't barged his way to stand directly in front of me, I shoot. Sometimes, I get annoyed at them and shoot anyway. If I'm using lasers, I will hit 99% of the time and usually for the entire burn unless they retreat out of LoS quickly. I usually only take longer shots if the weapon can clearly handle it, otherwise it's a waste. With Gauss, I always take the shot and have gotten pretty decent at leading a shot because of all the practice and instances where I've missed.
The more you shoot, the more you learn how the projectile works and how long the laser burn is going to last, as well as holding the laser steady while zoomed. It'll become second nature. So I say, shoot often! If you like sniping or just taking potshots and hiding behind terrain, you also learn how much you need to stick your mech out to get that shot off from your torso/arm, so the terrain doesn't block it.
