Free look is left CTRL.
Sounds like you are hitting Left Shift (armlock hold to toggle)

If we were hitting armlock then the torso would twist instead of nothing happening. Is it possible to assume, for just a moment, that the multiple people who have reported having this issue for nigh-on two years are not all mentally deficient? (After all, I've only been doing this for like three decades now.)

Never seen this issue reported before and been here since 2012. o.O;
Interestingly, Armlock has only been around since mid 2013. (Thus if the issue has been going on for nearly two years.... it'd start about 6 months after the introduction of Armlock)

Could you have both the armlock and freelook on the same button, or the two keys activating at the same time (via stuck key or debris bringing both keys down?)

"Now after coming back to the game, holding this key does only 1 thing : It prevents me from using my mouse to look/rotate/move at all."

Okay reading this a bit better, it sounds like his mouse gets disabled by hitting left ctrl.
Time to reassign the key.
(And might I suggest not using laptops? Laptops make horrific gaming platforms.)

Well, OP made this thread reporting the problem in 2014, so... (I too have been on the forums since 2012, btw.)

I'm running default controls. Armlock still works correctly. And freelook used to work correctly...before I stopped playing for a while (A couple-few months after the Phoenix package?) This is now a fresh install I'm playing on, and if I hold down L.Ctrl and move the mouse the only thing that happens is the circle (arm indicator) moves, but only straight up and down (and oddly I don't think the arms' aim is actually moving.) and if I move my mouse to one side a ways and let go of L.Ctrl then the torso twist will suddenly snap all the way in that direction.

But this entire discussion of the exact effects is inane because the important part is that freelook simply doesn't work for some reason...which is really pissing me off, as I rely on being able to look around for maximum situational awareness. (It's bad enough I can't properly just map a joystick to freelook like in literally every other cockpit-based game I play.)

The thread OP says he uninstalled TrackIR or FreeTrackNoIR or somesuch and that fixed it, so there's obviously some conflict regarding the game's TrackIR implementation. (Which, as I recall, has been added since I played last.) If only there were an option to completely disable it... Because it sounds to me like the game is always looking for a TrackIR device and so any number of things could possibly flummox it. (Since if the game detects a TrackIR device, it seems to ignore other sources of freelook input.)

Of course, other than TrinusVR, there's nothing on my system that has any even remotely TrackIR-related function in it...and given the amount of configuration involved, I'm sure as **** not going to uninstall TrinusVR just to see if it unbuggers this mess. :\

If you're using a Lenovo laptop, I had issues with left Cntrl not working on my work lappy. There is a setting in keyboard options that fixes this, but I can't remember exactly which one. For some reason, IBM Thinkpad which became Lenovo map left control to some silly function.

OP's problem seems to have been fixed by uninstalling FreeTrackNoIR... I'm on a regular computer though, so I know it's not a keyboard thing. I'm thinking I've got the same conflict, but with TrinusVR because it has TrackIR, and FreeTrack hooks for the headtracking... I can't confirm though because there's no way in holy hell I'm uninstalling it due to all the fiddly configuration I had to do for my headset. :\

There is an existing issue with those tracking programs. My freelook wasn't working for almost a year until i went digging for left over files and found I still had the NPClient file for opentrack. I spent about a week with support and that was the only thing that worked so face trackers need to be removed unfortunately

Just in case anyone else has this issue like I did and isn't sure, Trinus VR is what was breaking it for me. Uninstalled that and FreeLook is working fine now.

OK, it was indeed FreeTrackNoIR that was causing it for me! MWO must have been picking up the driver as a trackIR headset.

Finally I can look around again!! Thankyou for the help everyone!

I'm in exactly the same situation.

I've been using opentrack för Star Citizen, thought one of the axis under controller/joystick might have corresponded to looking around and it might have gotten triggered by that.

But to no avail, I've reset the controls no luck, I have not tried uninstalling Opentrack yet, that is the next step in the trouble shooting.

It was opentrack for me, uninstalled it and now freelook works, strange but glad I could figure it out with the help of the people in this thread!
