I think that map would play out more like the current circle the map fests then any map ever...

I guess it's a good thing what map you play on isn't random or something.

Yeah, because nobody knows how to use the mentioned obstacles for cover and designers also don;t know how to use said obstacles to redirect flow.....

NARCs would be awful on a map like that. Worse than Caustic

Big crater in the middle. Okay--killing ground.
But what about the edges. Plenty of room for other things.

Awesome idea. There needs to be some sort of reason for being down the bottom, however, as the higher edges of the crater would infer a vast tactical advantage against those slumming it further down. Direct fire would be more accurate, and LRM's would be utterly deadly. There would have to be some serious thought put into cover. Also, if it was a steep enough slope, faster mechs could also end up doing the leg-break-bounce-shuffle every time they changed direction, so care would need to be taken.
Perhaps a partially terraced mine?

Maybe even some water at the bottom, that offers a drastic cooling bonus to anyone standing in it?

Hmmm. If it were a kidney shape, perhaps the inner part of the crater could have some structures on it.

There could be huge boulders, or rock formations that survived or were formed with an asteroid impact? A bit like the spires in tourmaline, but sharper and radiating outwards from the impact point.
There could also be freight tunnels leading upwards/downwards towards points of interest or structures.
This sort of map seems to lend itself more to the objective style mentioned for CW - perhaps capturing the center could activate orbital defenses or some crap like that? Think along the lines of a military installation orbiting the impact site like the hyperion base in borderlands, or like the installation visible from the new map. If you take the center, you get a large advantage, but are vulnerable while you do it.
I think the idea of a crater map has merit.

Toss some cover in the middle, maybe some Giant Spires for cover. This is where the limited game modes hurt though, if this was a king of the hill with 1 cap point it would work to give a reason to head to middle. Caves would be fun though, get behind a DW and it's in a world of hurt, run face on and OMG.
I do like the idea of seeing all your opponents across the map well out of range of anything though, would feel like an epic battle about to take place.
