Hello,

I'm having a problem with crossfire and MWO. Basically, I have framerates that average around 30-40 FPS and drop down to 20-30 FPS when in heavy combat. This is almost unplayable for me.

I installed MSI Afterburner and used the on-screen display to view GPU core clock speeds and usage rates. Whenever I enter the mechlab, training grounds, or a match, GPU1 is at 725 MHz and 90-100% usage, while GPU2 is at 157 MHz and 0% usage.

When I load up PassMark, FurMark, or Rome 2, both GPUs are at their max frequency and 70-100% usage, which tells me this problem is unique to MWO.

I have searched around the forums and tried almost everything:
1) I disabled ULPS by searching my registry for keys called "EnableULPS" and setting them to 0 (this is confirmed by the "disable ULPS" check box in afterburner).
2) I added a profile for MWOClient.exe to Catalyst Control Center and tried several application profiles, including AFR, bioshock, borderlands2, and crysis3.
3) I created a user.cfg file and added the lines "r_MultiGPU = 1" and "r_ShadersAsyncCompiling=0"
4) I ran the MWO repair tool and checked the "delete systemoveride.cfg" box
5) I tried both DX9 and DX11
6) I always run my games in full screen mode see edit

None of these things worked. Do you guys have any suggestions?

Here are some of my system specs:
Windows 7 64-bit
2x ATI Radeon HD 5850
AMD Catalyst Version 14.9

Let me know if you guys need more information.

EDIT: Wow, I feel stupid. I did not realize that "full windowed" was not the same as "full screen". Having changed to "full screen" mode, I now see both GPUs at 725 MHz and around 60% usage each. My framerate hasn't improved very much, but that is a separate problem. Perhaps the bottleneck is my CPU.

Well your CPU may be an issue. But 2x 5850 performs about on par with a 7950 which is an aging top end gpu (now mid range). I would say go buy a r9 290 for 300 bucks unless you have a really bad cpu. If you have a decent cpu you will run any game on max better than those 5850s can run it on medium.

EDIT: Some places you can get r9 290s for 260ish.

Thanks for the advice. I'm actually considering that crossfire might not be worth the trouble and I would be better off with 1 GPU that is more powerful. The reason I went with crossfire in the first place is because of it's high performance/dollar ratio, but that is contingent on the game utilizing the GPUs efficiently. :P

After doing some more testing, it doesn't seem that the CPU or the RAM is the bottleneck. The best profile I have gotten working in CCC is the bioshock one, which runs much smoother than with a single card, but I get some flickering artifacts in the mechlab. Turning off shadows improves performance and reduces the mechlab flickering.

However, I'm having an issue now where the GPUs are not being fully utilized and my framerate is suffering. With both GPUs at 100%, I have almost a constant 60 FPS (which is glorious), but that only lasts a few minutes. Most of the time, they each sit at around 30% and 30 FPS, with occasional momentary drops to 15-20 FPS. Maybe I'll just try going through application profiles in CCC one by one.

I got rid of my triple crossfired 7950's in favor of a new 980. my electric bill and sanity both thank me.
