I appreciate sane limitations on signature size in forums, but I’ve run across something that I’d like to ask the Web folks to consider.

I believe there is an undocumented character number limit on signatures in addition to the limits listed on the signature editing page. This causes a problem when links are added to a signature as this character limit is quickly exceeded. I was able to exceed the character limit with three links to posts on the MWO forums.

What I’d like to suggest is that text in anchor tags not be counted against the total character limit in the signature.

If it is relevant, what I was trying to do was provide links to guides I have written and posted, something like:

My Guides: Understanding Ballistics, Missiles, Energy Weapons, Equipment, Heat, Damage, and Mech Customization.

That comes to 841 characters with the markup tags, 111 without.

Thanks for your consideration.

I talked to support a while back about this, apparently it's a hard limitation in the 3rd party forum code they use. As a partial solution, consider using a URL shortener like tinyurl, goo.gl or bitly.com. That would turn your first link:

http://mwomercs.com/...d-machine-guns/ (107 characters)

to this:

http://tinyurl.com/kqvjtxt (26 characters) http://goo.gl/04ciWX (20 characters) http://bit.ly/1zuVGfy (21 characters)

Another option would be to make an index thread here on the forums that links to your various guides, then link to that in your signature. You could also use the index thread as a polling ground to discuss other topics people would like to see guides on.

Thank you for the helpful reply. I'll probably go the route of creating an index post as URL shorteners are scary--who knows where they go? :)

I'd thought about an index post anyway but I was leery of overposting, but it's the best solution at this point.
