I had some rather "strange" experiences where i did better with some mechs before i elited them. You don't need an elited/mastered mech to do good, you just need to play "well".

Some of that (for me anyways) was the "Better" movement and the like was throwing me off

I had to downgrade the engines in my Commando, for example.
Edit: Plus side to that ^^ was more weaponry got mounted :D

Same here, downgraded engine on my Stalker. I was too fast and founded myself in PUG games playing scout role!

From my personal experience, I do better in my IS mechs than I do any of my Clan mechs. So no, not necessary.

The only reason I spend money on this game is because... I like it and want to support it!

Plus it does help speed up the grind and get me more mechs!

And even those will all be available for Cbills before to much longer ^_^

Seconding this for me as well - After mech4 and Mechassault I really do not want this one to end. :(

Yes (despite all the posts to contrary), unless you can handle a very very long grind. The advantages of good Xp bonuses are huge, a cooler, faster, more nimble, more accurate mech plus better zoom for long range shots. Once you reach master level with a mech, you're mech is at least 25% better than it began.

You can get to the exact same place never having spent a dime. Money will help you get there faster. but it won't give you a permanent advantage.

Pay to Win, IMO, is paying to get a permanent advantage that non-paying players can't have. By that definition, this is not a Pay to Win game.

I mastered the Jagermech chasis in a little over a week, and I do not consider myself a hardcore player. It can be done once you are past the learning curve and know what you're doing.

Ditto. I have a Nova that I have maxed Basic skills on.

Some aspects of Clan weapons are more fun (I love Clan missiles and AC). I would not describe them as better. If anything, they are harder in some ways. AC's break up shots into several smaller shots, which IMO kinda defeats the purpose of them. I found it annoying not being able to tweak my engine or add/remove jump jets.

Hero mechs are the same deal. They are often better because of the hardpoint distribution, but not always. And you cannot put custom camo on them, which I hate. Ever since they nerfed Gauss guns my Heavy metal has been collecting dust...just not as fun to play anymore.

Almost perfect definition here! I'd only add 'in-game playing' between 'permanent' and 'advantage' to incorporate Hero mechs and premium time.

Having said that. The MC arty/air strikes, UAV and Cool shot DO give an in-game playing advantage, though I'd say the effect is marginal and not even remotely near an 'I win!' button.

Their advantage disappears completely once you put some GXP into the Cbill versions.

This game makes me work harder to earn some cash. I want to buy Camos, paints, and those hanging items!
Speaking of hanging items, I really like to have a 'Rosary' hanging around my cockpit like most of the cars here in the Philippines! And then that rosary will make me win PUGs! And then its pay to win. :o

You can pay to easen the grind or pay for shiny new stuff in this game.
And this game is damn hard to master,i used to play the original Day of Defeat(Half-Life mod, think Counterstrike with WW2 weaponry) back in 2002-2010,and the sudden deaths were a real issue for me for the first 3-4 months in this game.
But if you like challenge, this game offers just that. Not shallow shoot-em-up,just pure challenge.

I'd say if you want to keep up with the meta you kind of have to spend, several metamechs have been heros, and when stuff gets buffed or nerfed a new chassis might be best, already having them bought in a pack saves you a lot of time.

But in group or pug play it really doesn't matter.

Why does this seem familiar...hmmm

Time to redesign my stalkers i guess...

Back @ OP's topic. 2/3 of the stuff for sale with are "fluff", such as camo, colours, standing/hanging items, warhorns, etc. The rest consist of champion and hero mechs. Don't forget the mechbay.

Hero mechs do not give you a big advantage over the normal ones, the developers took care to minimise that.

No you only have to play much longer to get an appropriate sum of Cbills to buys something. Same procedure with XPs!

I thought those improvements also applied to the GXP versions?

Nope - same as the weapon range mods for the LL do not affect the ERLL
That was something the Devs talked about when the items came out - to prevent P2W accusations from the consumables. B)
