I actually corresponded with the author, Joe Haldeman, that wrote a script called The Mechanics that Robot Jox was based off of. He wasn't really happy with the final product, but I guess the check cleared. If you get a chance, check out the novel Forever War. No mechs, but good hard scifi.

I loved that movie even though the acting was pretty cheesey. I might have to see about picking up a DVD copy of it. Something along a similar line was this (even had one of the same actors, Danny Kamekona):

absolutely adored this movie as a kid, watched it hundreds of times. Looking back, lots of it seems silly, but those mech designs are still awesome, the sound effects work is still awesome, and the stop motion is convincing at times. It had A LOT of potential to be truly badass.
