Hi,

just had an idea how you can make the leaderboards more interesting and wanted to hear your opinion.

We all know the problem of leaderboards: being number 43.456 out of 245.454 is not very interesting.

Starcraft 2 had an interesting approach: there are still Millions of players, but Starcraft divides them into Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze leagues, each 100 Players strong. (don't hit me if some numbers are wrong, didn't play it since a year).

Of course there were houndreds of thousands of these leagues. But being Silver is more interesting than being a 5-digit number.

How could this translate into Mechwarrior Online?

Just imagine you are a scout. You are quite a good scout. But because there are so many players, you are still just number 32.023.

Now imagine: Next to your tag appears not a number, but a Houseunit that mirrors your ability.

Example:

Not Hot Tacco 16.331
But HotTacco Davion Light Guard

Could even make the matchmaking more interesting:

Not random nicknames, but, according to faction: a lance from the 2nd Capellan Defence Force against a lance from the Davion Heavy Gurads, just as an example.

Think this would make the game more vivid.

Your opinions on this?

I agree. Skill needs to be looked at in the larger matching making system. MW:LL have an interesting system of higher skill players 'costing' more in kill Xp and newbs less. Also i think it is mektech offering 'bounty' on higher skilled players from a betting system of spectators.

Both sound great and should be stolen

Skill/"ELO" ranking with titles, not numbers. I like it.

I don't think it should be tied to a canonical title, because people may want to switch factions, or are part of merc companies etc. But sure, titles make sense, and has pimp factor.

The names could change if you move to another faction. I mean, it's basically just eyecandy.

And it's also more motivating for players that don't play that often and are low-leveled. Then not Nbrs. 123,434 - 234.443 play against each other, but Hesperus Garrison Regiment vs. Canopus Mechanized Brigade or sth. like that.

That's not something that needs to be added immedeately, but I hope many player would appreciate it. It doesn't make the game more complex or detracts something from the experience, it would just be nice to have.

OP: I'm sure the Solaris 7 rules could be adapted or combined with your idea. MW4:Mercs had a relatively simple way to handle them. You'd start out in the Light Mech arenas and had to score a couple of victories in order to qualify for the next weight class or championships, which eventually qualified you for the Grand Chamionship.

Now with the number of players out there you could flesh it out a little and add further conditions as you go along. Also, your starting point is not restricted to any Mech class because of Role Warfare, so you shouldn't be able to skip any class. You might also allow swapping championships for leagues/ladders derived from random games for those who don't want to spend their time in the arenas and go from there. At the end you would have not only one league to compete in (or however you want to call it), but several due to the way the game is built. Alternatively you could specialise in one weight class, but you wouldn't be able to compete on the highest levels due to lack of a sufficient ranking in the other classes.

Just an idea =)

The best way to steal ideas from SC2 is by not using them...
