I was in the same situation and I went with the Ilya. It's pretty fun if you manage to get around with low mounted hardpoints. It's pretty unique in sense that it's the only IS 'Mech that has its ballistic hardpoints spread over 3 different components.

I do love my Firebrand. I though about the Ilya but was unimpressed by the 4x Phract ( due to the low hardpoints) so I went Firebrand and really enjoy it.

The Ilya is probably the best heavy hero, but you have that. So, process of elimination--the Jester is a good mech, but it is the quintessential skirmisher (mid range) mech. It has a fairly fixed range band where it works well and you can’t really brawl in it. The Protector is good too, but the quirks on it are wrong (in my opinion). If they get fixed in a future pass it has great potential, but that’s a gamble. I like the Dragon and Quickdraw chassis but their heroes are kinda meh, except maybe for the Flame. That leaves the Firebrand. The Jager is a good mech but I don’t think the Firebrand is the best Jager. That being said, if you buy the FB then you can skip the A, which is totally worth it. I wouldn’t consider the Jager a brawler mech, though.

So if you want the ‘next best’ heavy hero after the Ilya I’d say get the Firebrand. If you want the next best brawler heavy hero, I think that’s the Protector.
