I was just in a match where I was chasing a locust in hopes of killing it. I had another mech targeted at the time and went to try and target the locust. Bang, sensors pop up a direwolf on my rear left flank 500 meters away. Attempt to lock target again and Bam! I get a lock on a battlemaster 200 meters off to my right. Then on the 3rd attempt I got the locust locked up.
So would it be possible to get a "target closest" or "target under cross hairs". Also "target attacker" would be a nice command but not really a needed one. Target attacker would just allow you to target (if they are targetable) the person or persons shooting you. Prioritizing the one closest to you first.
I mostly pilot lights. In a light battle, a split second can mean the difference between living and dying. So not having to cycle thru targets until you get the right one would be a huge boon to myself and most other pilots.
Also once I locked a target (and this is asking alot) would it be possible to get a match speed key?
We do have computers in our mechs and I believe it is not too much of a stretch to believe that some, if not all of these targeting functions would be including in the basic software package of said computer.

I've never had a big problem with picking targets to lock on to. If I'm looking at it and it is lockable, it always locks on to the right mech. Strange.
Anyway, match speed might be nice, but awkward too. Seems better for a flight sim where there is less crap to run into. Still might be interesting though.

Pretty sure it already locks to target under crosshair, if that target is available.
Not sure how the cycle works.

I would agree to some extent. but I have had many occasions where I have 2 mechs, 1 at say 150meters and another at 500 meters and the crosshairs covering them both and get a lock on the one at 500 meters first. and I have also had the target under crosshair not targeted. target nearest would be cool with me and target under crosshairs may already be in place. anyway, just some thoughts.

Agreed.
Freespace had nice targetting feature to help with this kind of thing, in particular "target enemy under reticule".
And also "target nearest hostile" which works based on distance, not bearing. You could target friendlies to see their exact status. "Target the target's target" would be a nice way to aid in focusing fire. Freespace also had "target nearest attacker", "target nearest friendly", "target the target's nearest attacker", etc. Hell, you could lock *multiple* targets in Freespace 2... and that was in 1999!
