Am I missing something in the UI or is there no way to tell which unit you're being invited to join when you receive an invite? Equally, is there no message when you receive a friend request beyond the friend request itself?

Correct. Nothing past that. Frankly, a unit invite is a rather big deal (you can only be in one unit after all) and you should know if you're getting such an invite. As for a friend request, it would be nice if you could add a bit of text to one, but you can't.

Nobody would argue with this.

A LFG (Looking for Group) tab where you can join lances would be great. Maybe max it out at 4 and they can manually invite after that if they want a bigger group.

You guys should go help beta test the MWO lobby. Click the Community button up top, and you'll find it.

Its been mentioned many times and glossed over by the powers that be. Part of the issue and fear would be the flame wars it would turn into.
Happens on War Thunder all the time. Given the level of vocal negativity on the forums here, it would degenerate the chat tab pretty damn fast. Shame really.

Essentially, you cannot see what Unit is sending you the Unit invite; only the name of the player who is sending it. Thus, unless you know what Unit that person is in, you cannot tell what Unit is recruiting you.

During the intermittent time period when I was between Units, I received two or three Unit invites out of the blue. I turned them all down because I did not recognize the senders. I suppose they must have been pugs I dropped with who liked my fighting ability and decided to send the invite. It was a bit awkward; we really need a better social function in this game.

Yes, that's my problem. I've been invited to join a couple of units (and I doubt it's related to my fighting prowess, unless they caught me on a very good day, so I'm inclined to think of it as a kind-hearted gesture) but playing WoW for a while makes me leery of joining any unit that I don't know about.

Shame. Part of me would quite like to join a unit (assuming I get my payment troubles with PGI sorted) but I want to make sure I join a unit that suits me, not just one that'll have me.

You're absolutely right. I highly recommend joining a unit, but I also recommend you go about it by looking through the "want ads" sections in the Merc Corps and/or Clans sections, depending on what your inclination is. Those should help you see what units are out there and what they're like. The majority of units would want you to take some drops with them for their sake and yours before joining. Frankly, I wouldn't join any unit that "cold invites" people.
