Is it possible for me to edit or mod the in game map that is displayed during gameplay? My intention is to make something more legible and mark areas on the map that are of interest to me. I would then potentially be able to share these modified maps with others in my unit so we are all looking at the same map.
If this is something we cannot currently do is it something that could be looked into?

what your asking is akin to cheating. whats next? custom orange textures for all mechs so they contrast highly reglardless of cammo?
ability to toggle a wireframe mode to see through terrain?
altho im sure there are some players that are trying to come up with these things they are definatly considered cheating.
anything you see is what your opponents should see otherwise you are simply being unsportsman and seeking an unlevel playing field.

Hell no it's not. People do this in their minds every single time they look at the map. The only difference is that Thomas wants to share his map with his team.
A shared tac map which a player (the company or lance commander, for instance) could draw on and share with his team mates would be awesome if it wasn't just going to end up as a place to share drawings of wangs.

I would't say what Thomas wants is cheating. And I know where he's going with it. But if people had the ability to modify texture files like that, then it could lead to cheating. So I don't see it happening any time soon.
