Okay, so this might just be me, and it's probably in the wrong section so feel free to move this. And this might be something already well known that I should have known about. Not sure.

But after messing about with the Shift-F11 shortcut to take screenshots, I accidentally hit the F9 key and noticed that, upon disabling the HUD, I was gaining a good 10fps. That's according to MW:O's FPS counter anyway, but I don't really know of any counters out there that don't tell the proper rate.

Is this just me? What is it about the HUD that's causing such slowdown? Since when can a HUD cause significant slowdown? :P

HUD is a FPS Killer for everyone and PGI is unable to change that bcs MWO is stuck with a Version of Cryengine that has a less optimized version of this "Scaleform" crap that makes up the HUD.

I was not aware the HUD was so bad. Well, that sucks :(

Has there been any plans mentioned to correct this? I'm sure it isn't a priority, but I am curious.

Probably not since it's a product of the game engine. That's notoriously hard to change post-production. They would probably have to take the game offline in order to re-code the engine.

No, they have their own offlline builds to do that and simply patch it in, when they are done. They are not developing on the live system. No developer should ever do that.

Improvements for the HUD are promised and in the pipeline. The scaleform problem is a big one though, so this might take a while and will definatly not be a project before community warfare is up and running.

Please note, that I did not make an official announcement. I can't do that, as I have as much informations as the next user, because I am a user just like you, in all regards except for the responsibility for the forum. I just happened to remember that this was said somewhere. I believe it was in one of the townhall meetings on NGNG, but I'm not 100 % sure on that.

Edomane is correct, Russ had talked about it before, both in town hall and on forum. Essentially shakedown is not an easily replaceable module in the deprecated version of cryengine they use. Changing is possible but would be like brain surgery. Delicate, risky stuff that requires a lot of effort. It's on the list of things to do. Probably after cw there will be a poll on user desired priorities.

They might not even have a license for new version of scaleform.

For those of you who missed it, or simply wasn't here back then, there was a most excellent post by Karl Berg about the (then) very common HUD issues; it goes a bit to show that

1. Yes, these guys do know what they're doing - at least sometimes ;)
2. CryEngine is a mess, and so is ScaleForm.
3. Programming - and debugging - is harder than it looks.

So while they managed to finally track down and fix the numerous HUD bugs, it's really no surprise if the HUD is a FPS hog.

Oh man, 10 more FPS would be so awesome!

I hope they will get rid of these crappy pieces of code ealier than i believe they do

Perhaps an entry in the User.cfg file in the form of cl_fov = ?? (bigger # brings you closer to the wind screen iirc) will reduce the amount of HUD displayed, thus cutting back on the amount of rendered frames?

P.S. Stay away from the CRTL key when in the action. ;)

Thanks for the replies guys, I didn't realise it was that deep of a problem. I guess it's just another example of the limitations of CryEngine... from the amount of problems I've heard games have had with it, you must wonder why it was ever touted as a good game engine in the first place. :P
