Something worth mentioning here is razers game booster. If like me you dont want to have to go through ms config to prevent things starting at boot this gives you a list of which processes and services you can temporarily kill whilr playing the game. It doesnt yield a huge gain but can help. It also adjusts a laptops power settings.

Im not sure on this one either but i also turn off antivirus and even tried temporarilly turning of win defender last night. Then you have the ready boost function with an ssd pen drive but im not convinced that does very much at all.

The best gain i got was from trying to keep my laptop cool so i sit it on a tray with built in fan.

Can anybody else vouch for Game Booster? I just went through six pages of forum search results and found nothing conclusive. Some people say it works, some people say it doesn't, and I'm more worried that it'll come with adware and add extra processes without me realising it.

I've already altered my StartUp to reflect some items I frequently close in the Task Manager, but short of googling every running process, I'm not sure how much better I can do other than closing down explorer.exe, which I kinda have no problem with.

And strangely enough, my laptop doesn't run hot at all, even without a proper cooling pad. It gets quite warm, but not even as warm as my power adapter and nowhere near the temperatures of other people's laptops that I've seen. I also just discovered that I could lock my fan to max speed while playing, but I wonder if this will even help since it doesn't seem to be excessively hot. Are their any downsides to doing this?

for the record, it's a Lenovo Thinkpad T530, stock hardware.

Thanks. My machine is good, but what does that mean?

One recommendation, though. Think hard before lowering the resolution. Doing that will not only extremly lower the image quality, but make it a lot harder to spot distant enemies and identify parts of a mech.

I'm running minimum resolution (720) and I have my desktop/screen set to the same res as well. Never have problems aiming or seeing distant mechs.

I've heard something about lowering the res to below the native res of your monitor can impact performance, but I can't find anything solid on that.

If/when you stick to the monitors aspect ratio, the negative effect of using anything other than your monitor's native resolution is not that big. Choosing a resolution that's not the same aspect ratio really does make it worse. WIth different aspect ratio's rescaling might be needed. It's all about personal preference though.

I have never heard or seen any negative impact on actual peformance. I have on image quality. Personally I'd rather turn eye candy down with native resolution than vice versa, but ofcoruse there's people that need to do both in order to be able to run this game on their system.

Thanks for the excellent stuff!

I thought I'd link here a reddit post on this topic, which I ran across while trying to optimise my own FPS.

http://www.reddit.co...ngs_effect_fps/

This guy did testing on the effect of the video settings bordering on scientific. He changed one setting at a time, ran a predefined route, recorded the FPS, all repeated using normal/heat/night vision.

The findings basically mirror what you say: the Environment setting is a huge FPS hog, some have very little effect (Effects, Post Processing, Shading, Texturing), while the rest are somewhere in between.

About lowering the resolution: I guess the viability of doing this depends. Me, I play on a ThinkPad which has a high-resolution screen (1920*1080) but a weakish GPU (Geforce 740M). I play at 1280x720 because that alone takes the FPS from about 35 to 60, and on that small 15" screen 1280x720 looks just fine. It's basically an option of running on lowest possible settings at 1920x1080, or at medium/high (but Environment at low) at 1280x720, and on a small screen the latter subjectively looks better. On a bigger 20+ inch screen something like 1280x720 would probably look awful.

After your post I checked the effect of DX9 vs. DX11 on Testing Grounds, and at least on my system the effect is huge: about 10-15 higher FPS with DX9. So based on that bit of anecdotal evidence, I highly recommend testing DX9 vs. DX11.

I feel like we could really use a stickied guide on this. The video settings in this game are a complex issue, but they appear to potentially make a big difference in getting good FPS while retaining surprisingly nice visuals.

No.

Create a new text document, then save it as a .cfg - I'm not sure how many of those options still work now though - for example, cockpit glass and fov have been shifted to options now.

In my personal experience the razor booster works for me, my laptop is the bottom of the toilet bowl type so without razor my average fps would be around 15-19 only... some maps with lots of details are just unplayable.

But with razor (turning everything off except explorer and teamspeak) the fps average around 20-30... only detail heavy maps does my fps drops to 18-19... so yeah, in my opinion the razor booster works to just get enough...

My brother who have a better rig than me doesn't notice any performance improvement with the razor booster though... with or without it he have an average of 30+ fps anyways.

I was able to order my better Video Card but it will be next month before I can also get the power supply and get it installed etc.

To give an idea how my eyesight effects playing me this game. Yesterday It just hit me again that I cannot tell if a Mech is facing me or looking the other way. Which sucks.....

I doubt I can ever do this but I'd like to get a 40 inch 4K TV/monitor and also use that.

I can run the game on max and get well beyond 60FPS, but I promise you that can just be a problem in general. A lot of mechs have a silhouette that is perfectly symmetrical. Easy to get things confused in the heat of a match, or with a dark map etc etc etc.
