I think if they put the number up right now, at peak time, it would show about 9k. I think most people would consider that number as a "dead game" because other games like for example hon / wt are showing numbers 40k-70k.

This is precisely why we do not display the numbers - judgements that mean absolutely nothing.

What's the point?

I know it's kind of a crazy thought, but some people might want to know if the game has a healthy population before they plunk down money on digital goods that go poof when the servers shut down. Crazy right? ;)

We don't need to know the numbers to realize that the population has dropped, its just we don't have know how worse or better than we actually think it is. Case in point I have actually played with people/against that are major posters on multiple occasions that's not a very good indicator of a large population. I know that isn't hard evidence but its something you'll never see in Wot or Lol or dota.

You understand how many players WoT/LoL and DOTA have right? yes you are correct in no way do we have numbers anywhere near this. But how many games do? look at the Steam list - yes MWO would end up in a very respectable position amount their game stats top 100 chart.

So those other crazy games that brag about their populations or have player counters and seem to be doing well are doing it wrong. That makes a lot of sense as PGI has so much experience in this space I think it's safe to defer to them. I mean who would want to cover up poor and declining numbers by removing a counter and not discussing concrete numbers.

Games that have healthy populations brag about them. Games with stagnant or worse populations claim the numbers are trade secrets. Ask PGI where the player counter is and see what the answer is.

Probably because if people knew how small and stagnant this community really is they would be far less likely to spend hundreds on over priced mech pixels.

If their judgements mean nothing, then there is no harm is there?

You have to be confident in your game and there is claims that the player population is healthy.

Posting those numbers won't stop people playing the game, yet might actually bring some people on the fence in, for whom player population matters.

Edit: missed a bit

People are already judging you, so why not try and make at least some of them rule in your favour?

Granted, not every player plays on the weekends, and for those that do, not all of them opt in to these events. I think between 5000-8000 players is a safe estimate.

I think your number is off, its definitely higher then this unless you are considering active players playing at any one time. 8K could not keep this game afloat. You have to realize the majority are f2p guys not buying anything. Players spending cash are the minority.

Total player base is definitely in the tens of thousands. Active in one night, or at any one time, its hard to say.

There's 1000 people on the forum right at this moment. On the forum! So take the guys that are asleep (EU, its 2a.m. now) take the fact that most people don't even check the forums, take into account the guys that are playing right now and not logged into the forums, and you can speculate a number way higher then 10000.

10K is not as much as it seems.

My guess is 10K MINIMUM. I hope one day we find out, it'd be nice to know who got it right :)!

Squeeze me? Are you omnipotent to know what I want? dayum you must be good. What am I going to have for dinner tonight?

Just because I "THINK" they are low, at least in oceanic times, doesn't mean I HOPE they are bad. It would just be good for a "side" to actually win and put this argument to bed. Showing how great the numbers are will actually stop some of the hypothetical bulling that goes on.

Given that you've been amongst PGI's most vocal critics for years now, I don't think your motives are all that magnanimous. Nor do I think you'd be pushing this thread if they were.

Your attitude over in Paul's "carry on" thread does little to relieve me of that opinion.

Cool story Bro. A vocal critic for years? considering I used to spend 4+hrs a night most nights for over a year, yeh I was a major critic for asking questions... dayum. Am I a critic now?probably yes, most vocal? Puuhlease.

Edit:
What does that make you?

no disrespect but top 100 in steam should not be hard. for today lowest peak game is 1600 of eve. my opinion the whole point of a player count is to know when ppl are on. if u got say 2k+ ppl on and it takes 2+mins to find a match something seems wrong there. that what a player count would be good for.

Really the issue is a feeling of control. You log in, you see the server number are low, you know you are probably going to end up in some less than ideal games. If the numbers are high, Elo should be giving you better matches. Or maybe it's the opposite -- lots of players might mean you get rolled a lot. Regardless, it just seems to me to be valid info. Hiding it seems sneaky.

They're on the forum because they are waiting 3 minutes or more for a match.

They dont need any ammunition - certain people will make negative comments 90% of the time and have the same people "Like" their comment.

It's unfortunate because it can lower the activity of the devs on the forums.

I like this comment - make your playing or buying decision based on your fun, if you don't have any fun then don't play and certainly do not buy. I am fine with that and even suggest it.

Part of the reason that I've never been a fan of like buttons on forums.

Still, they are getting desperate because they know a major point of contention is about to be resolved, so they are flailing about to find another complaint to latch on to. Real or imaginary.

And try to keep in mind, the trolls aren't the player base. Don't let them hinder communication with the rest of us. We appreciate Dev posts.

Yeh I have heard that bounced around a bit and would like a source.
It Would be interesting if that is true, one thing I would hate is for it to be like warthunder and still do patching separate to the steam client. Nothing worse then loading a steam game, Then have it patch in it's own launcher

I had been here since closed beta and all signs to me are that the population is strong as it's ever been, the community is more lively here than my other favorite MMO's that has more fame and supposed activity than this one, I'm certainly not worried that MWO has a low playerbase, like said, the forum itself is a nice indicator of the amount of interest that is in this game, and it's as strong as ever!

But wait a moment, did someone really say MWO is going to finally be added to steam? I've been awaiting that a long itme, if that's true I'd be delighted to see where that official statement comes from!

I believe the steam thing is possibly next year, but not set in stone or guaranteed to happen at all.
