I like to think of the Mad Dog as kind of a Timberwolf-lite... It's only 60 tons but can run the same types of loadouts and levels of firepower the TW can, but that comes at a cost of being less durable. To me that's a trade off I'm fine with. The mech can carry a massive offensive loadout.
I really haven't messed around with too many different builds on mine, because the two I used to level the variants out both worked very well. 2xLRM15s, 4xERMLs, 2xSRM6 is just about bulletproof for pug use.you can max the armor and still get plenty of ammo and heat sinks in to fight at whatever range you have to. You also have the the LRMs to scratch up the bad guys with - so usually when you commit to the brawl you'll be fresh - and it's not overly dependent on arm reaction speeds (perfect for leveling up cause this mech DOES feel sluggish until elited/doubled basics).
The other build is 1 Gauss, 3xERML, 2xSRM6. Great on heat - but the mech isn't great at face tanking and without LRMs you'll have to throw your grille out more often. Also this build is tougher without the unlocks because the arms are your life (and they're painfully sluggish without them). It's kind of the clan version of a gauss dragon on steroids...

This is probably the worst MDD build I have seen.
But it can be salvaged. http://mwo.smurfy-ne...4138d405ca9385c

Ghozzt of Clan Ghost Bear is an Ace MDG pilot. He like 3 x ASRM6, and an LBX20, on the left side of his mech, and uses the entire other sde as a shield, its great for deuling but im not to sure how it would work in a regular match.
I personally run all but 2 armor on the front of my side torso and that works pretty well.

I really don't see what the fuss is all about with Mad Dog STs, I generally get one popped early about as often as my Centys lose an arm...1 out of 7-8 matches?
Because about 80% of lrm's will just hit one side torso, it's an angle thing with the maddog's ST's and the arc of lrm's. It makes spreading damage against lrm's difficult.
And once that ST armor turns red or is scrapped you almost instantly lose the side torso. It IS only a 60 ton mech.
It's not so bad if you sit in the back and support or snipe, but brawling in a maddog will see your torso's getting popped quit easily and early in the fight.

Well, I don't sit back and snipe or support, but I also don't face hug. Regardless, never really seem to have a big issue out of it, but then I also don't get ST killed in XL Orions often, either. *Shrugs*

you do that in just about every mech though

And what is your master MDD build then? Easy to criticize, harder to back up.

Glass cannon. Love it for longer range engagements and LRM work. SRM builds are ok, although they tend to be very squishy. Not bad if you are in a group or escorting fatties that will arrtract more fire. You should NEVER lead the charge though
My fav build:
4xLRM15 (~1300 missiles)
TAG
3ERML
The missiles are going to stream anyways so I just launch them in chain fire.
The 3ERML is enough of a backup that you can defend yourself in a knife fight.
The LRM's are good in close as a distraction/aim killer.
Fast enough to flank and quickly get into position for missile support.
And if you are on a cold map and hit that sweet spot around 350-400m, you can do an INSANE level of damage. Throw in a coolshot and you can take out an assault easily.
But it is almost always best to fire from the back of the group due to the ST issues.
I am nowhere close to a great pilot, but I am averaging close to 400 damage per game (in spite of playing mostly PUG's and having a W/L slightly above 1).
