I've been toying with the idea of using a STD engine on my last Firestarter.
Is this crazy talk?
Does anyone have any good builds for 35 ton mechs with STD engines? I used to run an STD240 engine on my RVN-2X a year ago, but I don't think it would work today.

35 Ton Mechs With Standard Engines! Useless?

I'd like to see how often you lose a side torso and survive, as opposed to CT or leg death which would have killed you anyway.
My Kit Fox will sometimes lose a ST, and when that happens I'm glad I can still stay in the fight.

Yeah, it happens quite a lot to my Clan light mechs. And not only do you risk death from losing a side torso, but you also have to be very cautious as soon as someone strips your side torso armour. So it really handicaps your offense as well.
On a Raven, I guess people are just legging it anyway. On a Firestarter though? I feel like those don't get legged as often.

I like the idea of std engine in a firestarter. They are already the best light at soaking damage and torso twisting so being able to zombie would be a nice bonus. It is probably a personal preference thing but I would probably swap a couple of spl for ml just for some range. But with modules and everything it might not make a difference.

I had a blast using this back when I was gaining XP for my C-bill Firestarter Variants. http://mwo.smurfy-ne...d7a8f6ff29122fa

A Std 245 + required heatsink leaves you with 8.5 tonnes to play with, 10 tonnes if you use the stock armor values.
I think that you could work something out with that

I running a similiar build on my little firestarter. I think he has four or five medium pulse lasers. At work currently so i cant double check . I love that little guy though, it is great being able to move around like a light tank but still having a heavy enough of a punch to really hurt.

I would not get rid of jump jets as they are too valuable. If it was me I would run 2x mlas, 2x slas and 4x splas with a smaller engine. I have not run Firestarters with splas since quirks so your line of thinking may be valid.

Yes, you are crazy. As a light mech, survivability is all about speed. Rock an XL to maximize your damage potential.

Nah, seems good. Zombie Firestarters are scary as heck.

People mock my lights as being slow but i elited firestarters with STD engines (because i thought repair & rearm was returning soon) and they might be slow but it is bearable, and they live with more damage that way.
Some ravens i still use a standard engine in, like the 2X which can really tank damage that way, shield arm and all.
For a firestarter a STD 240 appears to be fine (as the 210 is not "fast enough" for people anymore) so i'm sure you'll be ok.
