Could someone please explain the troll thing? It is referenced quite often, and I'd like to know what people are talking about.

A "troll" is someone who basically stalks the forums, and posts random crap in odd places. It can also be a bot doing the same thing (note: nubnub and bunbun are likely bots).

A troll is someone who gets their giggles off of ticking off another person.

Okay bud. A troll is someone that deliberately stirs troubles up for no other reason than their own enjoyment. Be it on the forums or in game, a troll is there to be a general nuisance and pick fights. A general rule for a troll is to not feed them, but the little jerks get under the skin and they get fed and get ruder and ruder until either they are hit with the Ban Hammer or they are ignored.

Trolling is... Making a statement for the purposes of attracting opposition.

Like...

`Gundam is a better franchise then Battletech, why isn`t PGI using a good franchise like Gundam to base their game on?`

Not to be confused with someone simply exressing an unpopular oppinion.

Like...

"I had more fun playing 4th edition D&D then I ever did with 3.5"

basically when a 12 year old disagree's with you, or when you just burn someone so hard that they slip back into they're pattern of suicidal tendencies they usually come up with 'troll'. Ironically the individuals who most often use this term are usually themselves, massive trolls. You will not see me use this term outside of this very post, ever.

@OP,
All of these answers are essentially the correct ones concerning what a troll is. You've asked a good question, and I hope we all were able to give you the answer(s) you needed. If you need any more help concerning any terminology, legend, or lore, please feel free to ask. The only stupid question was the one NOT asked. :)

ok here, i'll play the troll for a touch

ok so this guy is what some would call a white knight, or more of a gray knight but essentially is another variety of troll
you'll notice his post has no real content of any kind relevant to the thread itself, rather, the poster seeks claim a moral high ground by offhandedly encouraging the OP while also pandering to the general thread itself with open ended, positive statments intended to create the illusion of a position of farmiliarity withing the perceived online community. The post ends with a farmiliar euphamism intended to both mask the overt awkwardness of the posts main body ad well as providing a farmiliar nuance for the reader intended to enourage a cogent reply.

now when a 'troll' observes this they are overcome by the urge to use this minor online faux pas as an outlet for a fundamental social aggression brought on by any number of stimulants often accumulated over his or her lifetime.

Ya know, when you're having an argument with someone and you think of something hurtful and logically unsound to say... and you know it won't help your side of the argument at all & it'll only serve to **** the other person off...

and then you go on and say it, then lean back in your chair and smile while they get all upset...? That's trolling.

Or when you say exactly what the other person doesn't want to hear just because you know it's what they don't want to hear? That's tolling, too.

You could also spit-out lies specifically intended to misdirect people and cause dischord... just because you take pleasure in making other people confused or unhappy... that's trolling.

Trolls get happy from the influence they exert over others; they like to manipulate people and they get a kick out of thinking they have control over other people.

Thankfully, we also use it as a joking term, so not all "trolls" are Trolls. Paul, though, is a [REDACTED].

Asking a polite, general question and getting replies does not count as a successful troll, if this was, indded, a troll thread. A "successful troll" requires something more inflammatory... like Steifel's German Food post. That was a good one.

No it's not, but I can recognize patterns when I see them. bunbun and nubnub are always "friending" the new people, and then suddenly and for no apparent reason, spam comes to their PM accounts. I've got several friends that this has happened to, and even more people that I know by acquaintance, but that aren't my "friend"... I know what I'm talking about in this regard. Plus, I remember seeing a dev thread warning about them about two months ago. :)
