So, since I can't currently search the fora for "virtualization" (attempting to do so returns the error message "[#10145] Search is not enabled on the community at this time.")...

While MWO is (currently) intended to be Windows-only and it should be possible for those who normally use other OSs to either dual-boot or have multiple computers, I am curious as to:
  • whether the Devs have attempted to run MWO inside of a virtual machine and the result(s) of said attempt(s), and
  • whether anyone more tech-savvy than me would know of a reason why MWO wouldn't or shouldn't run under, say, a Windows virtual machine running on Linux or Mac OS.
Given the recent Mac posts and that I, myself, dual-boot Linux and Windows, having some idea of whether MWO could - or could not - run if Parallels or VirtualBox or some other virtualization software were used would be useful and appreciated. :P

So... bump to see if anyone might know or have heard anything in the last week or so (and since I was silly enough to have originally posted this amid the furor of the Founder's Packs' release ;)).

We've had a few discussions on it. Nobody that's in the beta is allowed to speak about it. The only dev response has been limited to "this is a Windows-only app".

That said, I've never seen a modern FPS run well in Parallels or Fusion. I can't imagine VirtualBox to be astoundingly better. Yes, old or extremely efficient software will do it, or if you want to run at some tiny resolution, but intensive stuff just gets crushed. With the advent of the return of the Mac Pro, maybe you could get enough horsepower in it to do it, but it would seem a massive waste to me.

As others have said, you know what the engine is. It probably won't run any more efficiently than Crysis 2. So run that, and see how it goes.

most VM software doesn't like GPU intensive things like modern 3d games. Best bet to play is to install windows.
