Actually a gauss rifle would be very loud. If you've ever watched the military channel or discovery where they are working to develope actual gauss rifles the discharge of power they produce is incredibly loud.

Dredrik Salkon's keen ears found some MG sound bites at 1:53, 2:49 and 2:53. The last one (2:53) is clearest imo. Sadly, it is also quite short.

If I'm thinking about footage you are referring to, that's a navel rail-gun. They also use gas along with the magnetic coils. The gas ignites and explodes (thus the fire and noise). Gauss cannons are actually coil guns, there is a difference.

Around 1:12 the good ol' "Reactor online, sensors online, weapons online; all systems" part was there. Then it said ONLINE and not NOMINAL. Sad.
